Neighbor lady just gave me her wrecked Merc 300TD & I'm thinking about stuffing the engine into the Raider with a 700R4.

Gonna pull the engine this weekend & mock up the adapter plate, then have a local machine shop do a nice adapter.
I'll have Protorque build an appropriate torque converter & have the Merc flexplate drilled to fit. Might need a little adapter for it, too, unless it all fits good.

Indeed I will! The 300 turbodiesel is one of the best engines ever built and it just spools forever. It does have a definite turbo lag, but flat jumps into the business mode at 1700 rpms. I'd probably want to think a bit about what torque converter to use for an off-road truck.

Let's see some pictures of it as the build progresses.

I will definitely take pics & get measurements. If this works out, you will be able to call the machine shop & Torque converter shop, order the parts & do your own install. I used to supply the TC shop with cores when I worked at the salvage yard, so they will help me greatly.

I will eventually tweak the engine up as I did my old 240D with a Ford Probe turbo. I might look into the VNT turbos still availible, as the folks using them report almost no lag.

The 300 G-Wagen's in Germany and Austria have the 617 motor in them with a 5speed and locking diffs all the way around. The shorties have a similar footprint to the Gen I SWB body. Not sure if this is helpful but locating some of the spec sheets and diagrams might be of use for your swap. You can probably find them on eBay Germany.

When you do the soft fuel lines for the 617 swap, use SAE30R9 high pressure fuel hose and you'll be able to run biodiesel in the truck. This hose has a fluoro-elastomer lining that is alcohol resistant and will keep the biodiesel from rotting stock fuel lines. It's available at most all chain auto parts stores if you ask for "high pressure fuel injection hose" Just check it and it will have "SAE30R9" imprinted on it. If it has "SAE30R7" it's not the right nose.

There's a thread over in Expedition Portal where a guy did this swap into a Land Rover. A quick rundown of what he did on his full conversion/restoration:

1967 LR 109"
Mercedes 3.0L 5-cyl turbo diesel
Rebuilt NP435 4-speed with a Pangolin output shaft and adapter plate
Ashcroft high-ratio transfer case
Toyota 4:10 E-locker center differentials in Land Rover housings.

Here's the link: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8169

There's way more that hes done to it (400+ posts). I look forward to seeing the progress on your project. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
