Getting the Wheeling Fever
Is anyone turning in their truck for the incentive? I've had my truck for 18 solid years and still use it every weekend. It's been good to me and I'm sentimentally attached to it. The better half doesn't feel the same way and wants to trade it in for $4500. It kills me to send it to the compactor when it is still running great and looks good. It was garage kept for most of its life. At 16mpg, it still gets decent mileage for most of the trucks out there! But logic says to get the money while we can since time is not on our side for future repairs, especially the tranny which was never done. It only has 135,000 miles on it.
Just venting my frustration and wanted to see if anyone else has turned in their truck.

Easy decision financially lets just do the math...
Cost of additional maintenance assuming engine rebuild and possible transmission rebuild for the Monty: $6000
Cost of gas: you can calculate this depending on your annual mileage.

Cost of new car minus incentive: ?? probably >$6000
Cost of gas: again calculate depending on your annual mileage (this is where you may loose money versus the old Monty).

Which is cheaper over the short term say 3-5yrs? (probably Montero especially when you aren't making any payments and only need minimum coverage insurance)

Which is cheaper over the long term? (probably new car due to gas prices but keep in mind full coverage insurance cost while making payments) after +5 years depending on how far you have to drive.

If your wife really just wants a new car, buy a $500 used pickup, suv or 70's boat car to trade in! (or maybe there's some clause to prevent this?)

there is.

car must be registered and insured by the person trading in for the last year. car must be road worthy, and less than 25 yrs old.

theres an 89 SWB V6 auto that got traded in at my old dealer. i cried.

right now they have about 30 cars/trucks.

91 cherokee in mint condition. couple grand cherokees in decent shape. 99 durango. 99 explorer V8. few other cars that are in pretty nice condition.

Can you imagine the 'gold rush' to buy clunkers if there wasn't. Heck I'd do it and buy a little hatchback In fact if you keep it until the clunkers deal is over (is there a deadline?) you could sell it for a profit

Just fyi guys, The dealers are looking for sodium silicate for the program. According to the guidelines they have to fill the crank case up with three quarts to seize the motors before they crush em. We were talking about what a waste that is. One of the guys here Jeep qualifies and it is a 99 cherokee. What a waste of spare parts on anything turned in! I looked and I could get 2wd rangers or a 4cyl 4x4 colorado, but neither will pull 3/4 cord of wood and a trailer. I can beef up my truck for less then then the 3500-4500 they will give. I'm going to wait so I can get the Classic plate on it!

Not at all. Everything except the engine block itself can be resold as parts.
