ATT: New Changes To the clash for clunkers Program eliminte some, while adding others. The gov. changed some of the est. mpg for some auto's now eliminating them from the promotion, people who bought cars under this deal may be asked to pay the extra $4500 if this change affected their trade in. Just as well, other mpg estimates including the raider and montero have been lowered! making them more elegible for the program? Go to Cars.gov to find out more.

Once again, it looks like this administration may not know what they're doing:

Government to Stop "Cash for Clunkers"

Quote
The government plans to suspend its popular ôcash for clunkersö program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases, congressional officials said Thursday.

The Transportation Department called lawmakersÆ offices to alert them to the decision to suspend the program at midnight Friday. The program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle...............

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns about large backlogs in the processing of the deals in the government system, prompting the suspension.

A survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found about 25,000 deals had not yet approved by NHTSA, or nearly 13 trades per store. It raised concerns that with about 23,000 dealers taking part in the program, auto dealers may already have surpassed the 250,000 vehicle sales funded by the $1 billion program.

ôThereÆs a significant backlog of Æcash for clunkersÆ deals that make us question how much funding is still available in the program,ö said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the dealers association. The program was scheduled to run through Oct. 31.

Well...... duuuuuhhhh!

This program is rapidly building steam. I don't know how long it'll take for the government to run through the first billion bucks, but I suspect not long.

All of a sudden, I'm the dealer's long lost best buddy. It's sure good to be needed.

Not long at all...

As far as "saving" folks money, that is not even in the scheme of this program. It's original motive was to get more fuel efficent, less polluting cars on the road while getting older more polluting ones off.

As far as "saving" Money, OR getting more polluting cars off the roads... Bull Hockey.

This is all about saddling the american public with consumer debt, meanwhile "Stimulating" the economy.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Took my truck out 4-wheeling tonight for old time's sake, thinking it might be one of the last. Sugar sand and water filled ruts didn't slow me down at all. A few more squeaks and groans, but that's okay.

If the program ends tonight at midnight, all is well. I get to keep my truck and can't say I regret not trading it for something that wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Yes, I posted that a while back.

That's really funny! That was the tried and usually untrue method of calling something what it ain't long enough and loudly enough so folks believe that what it is.... is what it ain't.

A warm and fuzzy feel-good description can't cover the fact that the government now owns most of the domestic automotive industry and needs to make themselves look successful with your money or they'll be sorely criticized as being the lousy businessmen that they are. Now, they just might decide that they've been sooooo successful that they need to spend some more in order to keep from going bankrupt.

The sad truth was revealed in a conversation I recently had with a government EPA official (name withheld to protect the guilty) who when I asked how they intended to save the domestic auto industry if they didn't exclude imports from qualifying for the cash for clunkers money said "Well, we couldn't do that because it would be discriminatory". So, the result of all this will likely be a bunch of taxpayer money going to foreign interests. So much for us saving our own industry, eh?

Ah, well....... I don't think much of the domestic auto industry anyway...... and it's not my intent to turn this into a political post - so just take it as a bit of philosophical business rambling.

They're going to honor all deals in the pipeline, but watch for another 3 billion to be appropriated real soon in the name of a successful program, and lathered up with the feel good talk.

The backslapping has already started:

Quote
Even before the suspension, some in Congress were seeking more money for the auto sales stimulus. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich., wrote in a letter to House leaders on Wednesday requesting additional funding for the program.

"This is simply the most stimulative $1 billion the federal government has spent during the entire economic downturn," Miller said Thursday. "The federal government must come up with more money, immediately, to keep this program going."

Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said they would work with "the congressional sponsors and the administration to quickly review the results of the initiative."

General Motors Co. spokesman Greg Martin said Thursday the automaker hopes "there's a will and way to keep the CARS program going a little bit longer."

AP article stolen from Marge's post in the off-topic section.

Yessiree - we did a good job of spending that billion - let's take some more dope.
