Punctuation would make it almost readable.

Lesson in punctuation

"What is that on the road ahead" with the addition of a comma can be,

"What, is that on the road ahead"

"What is that, on the road ahead"

"What is that on, the road ahead"

"What is that on the road, ahead" (say this one out aloud for best effect)
