Getting the Wheeling Fever
I got just my new to me 1987 Sami home. It starts and runs good but temp shoots up to the red in a few minutes. Not sure the engine is really as hot as the gauge says it is but so far have replaced the thermostat, rad cap and radiator. Even took the new thermostat out and am running it without one - still very hot. What do you think - sending unit, receiving unit, head gasket, timing?? No oil in rad, no antifreeze in oil, no white exhaust. Need help.

Gerry

A couple of things to check: engine timing and water pump.

Are you circulating water through the radiator?

a pressure test of the cooling system might show a leak some where(or a bad radiator cap).
also if the radiator is gummed up or missing a lot of the cooling mesh, bad coolant mix?

mabe?
oh, i see new cap.
oh- sorry- i see new radiator also.
still think a pressure test would be a good idea.....

Thanks guys. A new temp. sending unit didn't change the reading. We did check the timing and it was a bit too far advanced but only a few degrees. The water pump is circulating well. But we hooked up an accessory temp. gauge and the temp. was exactly where it should have been. The gauge in the dash is not reading accurately. I don't know if the receiving unit in the dash can be replaced without replacing the whole gauge, but I think we'll just keep the accessory gauge and call it a day.
