I'm not tied to this weekend so let me know if you're interested. Date's have some flexibility & I wanted to gauge interest for a trip on this trail. There is another group (11 vehicles) also doing this trail during the same weekend that I know of. Having never been on this trail, I'm hoping that won't be too many rigs at one time. Let me if you have any insights or are interested in going. Thanks.

This trail is very expansive, so with 11 other vehicles on the trail you might not even see them once..Good luck, I'll be in Afghanistan during this time period, but you'll love this trail.

Justice that sucks that you won't be around for it. What dates are you gonna be around? The date I posted is very tentative and I can be swayed in one direction or another.
Also are there any insights or reference pages I should review for planning this trip?
Preferred camping spots, etc.?
TIA,
Ray

Ray, this is a three-day trip (if you want to run the whole distance). I usually run only the western two-thirds, the most interesting part. All you want to know about the road you can find here, a very useful guide: Mojave Road Guide By Dennis Casebier My latest Mojave travel is here: Mojave Road, 2007 Good luck !

Thanks for the link and insight Oleg. I'm looking at the 2/3rds distance/route. Are you gonna be able to make this trip maybe? Would be good to see you on a run. Nice write-up btw!

Ray, I did this two years ago with GrassCat. It's a fun trip and I still have the breadcrumb trail in my Garmin. There is not much in the way of 4x4ing other than you need it for the sand. Stock 4x4 with AT tires is all you need. The main challenge is navigation and logistics. On the navigation side it's the standard fork in the road questions and paralleled roads. I imported someone else's breadcrumb and It was off sometimes but it was better than nothing. My Garmin trail will be spot on if you want it. That covers getting lost or having to back track.
Second of course is logistics, being a Navy man I'm sure you will have it under control Gen 1 montero's with the smaller tank will need 10 gallons of extra gas. The Gen II can get by with 5 gallons. Or you can make the detour into town when you cross pavement mid way. Gen 1 in 4x4 will get 10 mpg on the trail if your lucky.
Large campsites are hard to come by, Grasscat and I did a northern run off the trail to a great spot. I'll give you the details in private.
If I can't make the trip you can borrow my SPOT messenger in case the something bad happens. It's nice to have the 911 button no matter where you are.
I have the book also so don't buy it It's good to have friends

Ray, my fiancee is coming on Aug 15, from Russia, and we will be busy for a while I cannot make any definite plans now Regarding your trip: do not forget to make a side trip to the Caruthers canyon: this is a great place to drive, to hike and for camping, too. In some places between Afton canyon and Soda lake, the road finding may be difficult because the river flood changes the surface. You have to follow the stone marks made by "friends of Mojave road".

The GC is who convinced me I need to do this trip although I wish it were the spring time instead of the fall. I hope you can make it as it would be good to get to see you for a trip other than a pismo run. I'll definitely want to borrow the book from you to help with planning. Also I do have a spot (xmas present from my great sister) but thanks for the offer. I may still take you up on it though. I haven't turned mine on yet since I haven't gone anywhere requiring it. Thanks. Will pm you for additional details. Also, I just heard from someone else planning this same trip on the same weekend from ExPo that it would be alot better if we did this on a different weekend. How 'crowded' is this trail? I mean from a camping POV, it would seem that there are more than enough camping spots but maybe I'm wrong there? TIA, Ray
