Regarding your trip: do not forget to make a side trip to the Caruthers canyon: this is a great place to drive, to hike and for camping, too.

In some places between Afton canyon and Soda lake, the road finding may be difficult because the river flood changes the surface. You have to follow the stone marks made by "friends of Mojave road".
