Lets hope the fires are out by then, I hear Barstow is a pretty dark place right now.

What are the communications specifics?

2 meter or CB???

That might have a bearing on which vehicle I bring as one is 2m and CB (no A/C) ready while the other is 2m only (and A/C) at this time....

John,

I believe only 2 of us have 2m at this point but most still have CB.

Perhaps a portable CB would make sense?

If you can swing it...
I recommend getting a 75-822 which is both a portable or an in car unit.

Comes with both battery pack or a coax antenna and 12v power piece for in car use. I keep the unit's antenna attached and have the battery pack in the side pocket (8x AA's) in case I need to use it out of the rig.

I have 3 working CBs sitting on a shelf in the garage. Two need new microphones and I need an antenna.

I ask as I am getting things together and wanted to know if I need to spend a couple hours with a CB install.

I have the dreaded CB. I'm also bringing my FRS's as some like to talk at great lengths on the CB. Not mentioning any name here, but he's going to be on this trip.

Les and I use the FRS radio on our trip. They worked great as you are always within 1/2 mile of each other.

Yeah, it's a tough decision to buy a new unit since you already have spare units.

Only reason it would make sense is if (A) you had the spare cash & (B) you didn't have the time to fix those other CB's to get a working on into your rig.

Besides with the unit above all you'd really have to worry about installing is the antenna since it really needs no 'installation' other than to have a spare cigarette lighter outlet and screw in the antenna wire.

It ain't cheap though. Lowest price I've found was ~$85 (shipping included) on Amazon.

I do like the compact size. Adding the antenna has always been the hard part.

I run mine on my roof racks although I've mounted them to both my bumpers and my gen I mirror's armature.
