17mm toggle socket, or socket+universal

24" extension bar-- that's why I own one.

Man it was a pain in the butt when i did it on my 3.0 v6 I had to come in from the top (behind the engine from the hood) with a 3 ft breaker bar and the right length of socket to clear the exaust . Good luck

Yup. I prefer a swivel socket/adapter over a universal joint as the swivel wont flop around and bend at an angle where you cant use it. Much easier to get on the bolt too.

Get a long enough extension where you can get your ratchet out in the open to get some leverage behind it. Put a 1/2 drive ratchet on it if you have to or an impact.

Some people say to undo the t-case crossmember and let it droop down to give you more room to access the top bolts, but I've never had to do that using a swivel and extensions.

Body Damage is Cool
If you are having trouble keeping the universal joint in position, get some electrical tape and give it a few wraps. This will allow it to swivel and not flop around.
I use a 24" and 12" extensions and the universal to get the top bolts. That puts the ratchet after the cross member and easy wrenching room.

X2 on the above suggestions. A few other tips I have heard and tried are first have someone guide the extension and socket in place through the shifter cutout hole in the floor. They can usually see the bolt heads through that hole. Or a body lift, even 1", can make access to those bolts a snap. What I found is that with a mild body lift, you can both see the bolt head and manuever the socket onto it at the same time. Without the lift, you have no clear view as the socket moves in.

^^ based on teh above info - you should also be able to gain significant access by first supporting the engine, lossening the motor mounts, lift it up, remove them, and lowering it down a bit.

i don't remember what I did when I pulled my motor - but I do remember those bolts eliciting a lot of profanity.

I've done it through the shifter floor cutout and also from the bottom. IIRC I had the tranny hanging down a bit. Use 1/2' drive extension/extensions ...too much flex with 3/8. I did not find it that bad. Maybe I was in a good spiritual condition that day.
