O.K. been awhile since ive been here ...Skeet & trap has been taking up alot of my time...SOooo last week i pulled into my driveway ,put the montero in park and noticed the gas gague fell below empty (never did that before ) So i get out my chiltons & my haynes ...no mention of gas /fuel gague failures .Next day i fill up just in case ...i go down the hill hit a bump ...WALA gague works again ,for a short period of time
I need ideas where to look ??what to try .or how to test .
Last resort would be drop the tank ...Any Ideas anyone ...?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
My gas gauge doesn't work on my gen I swb. My problem was the electrical connections on the sending unit broke and the electrical plug wouldn't stay attached.

It might help if you tell others which model you have

I had the same problem on mine. To fix it remove the sending unit, get some gas tank cleaner from national gas tank cleaner, and soak the sending unit in it. The unit corrodes over the years and the float eventually gets stuck. If you let it soak and move the float back and forth by hand it should free it up. Be carefull of the resister wires, as you dont want to break them. The longer it soaks the better it will be. Hope this helps. Chris

There should be an access panel for the tank sender in the back. Get at the wire and ground it (make SURE its the sender wire, not the fuel pump wire) and see if the gauge goes full scale. If so, it's the connector or the sender.

Not dead sure there is on a gen2. There is on all gen1 3.0's, and I guess on all gen1 year models that had the FI, even if it has the 2.6.

there is an access panel and the tank does not need to come down. last time i pulled a pump out of a gen 2 took about 10 minutes taking my time.

amazing how many tanks i see hanging in the yards with no pumps......and the access panel still in place
