Getting the Wheeling Fever
I am putting 8" truck 3.90's in a starion housing. The pattern was prefect and back lash consistent around the ring gear in the truck housing.

In the starion housing the pattern and back lash vary around the ring gear. I turned the ring gear 180 degrees on the diff housing and it helped but not enough.

I installed new national bearings on the diff housing prior to the first pattern check. Poor quality bearings maybe? I also noticed the ring gear is a little loose on the diff housing so it may have moved off center a couple of thousands when i tightened the bolts. Would that be enough to cause it?

Suggestions? Thanks

Second ? FSM calls for 4" lbs to turn the pinion preload. Other brands call for much more turning torque, What do you guys like to see.

If I post are you going tell me "that mite work for racing" or some other bs as such ...sigh ... Mr SR ...

I need to write this out and all ...I can drop gears faster then I can write this .. So the bs just wrecks the hole thing ...

And Mr SR ... my friend you have been trying your back side off to get it done .. cool... hats off to you my friend .. Just be nice .. this took years to get right every time all the time ..why do you think its the one thing no one can seem to do right in a car ... the person who showed me ..took him 100's of diff to do and not have one cook once its run ... not hard just need someone to show you all the thicks .. voodoo... lol... not every thing is on the web/net ...really ....lol..

So did you change side bearings befor you found a problem ..??? ... How did you install the baerings on the case ...???? ..did you use a 10000000 ton press...???

pull the pinion out of the case ... pull the ring gear off the LSD ... mount the LSD back in the case ... set perload on LSD tighter then you would in the diff normly ... "Mike" run out on LSD ring gear mouning flang... take a "file" to the RG mouning flang ... is there high spots on the RG flang..

let me know ...

earth to mars anyone understand any of this...???

Have a good day

Haztoys, welcome to the wire, but a word of advice. Intentional or not, this (above) kind of talk makes you sound arrogant, which I'm sure you're not. Some of your post contains, what I hope will be, useful help for StarquestRescue.

Giving the 'catch 22' scenario of 'why do you people bother trying set up gears if they don't already know how to' won't really be appreciated here. We show each other respect and try to help on this board.

We understand now that you set up gears for a living. So do others on here and they may disagree with some things you say. But that's OK because some have a different view of things and listening to them is a good way to learn something new

Hey man... Please go re-read your own post. I know you're brand new around here, but Speaking to members in this manner is not acceptable.

I don't care if you've been setting diffs up for 2000 years for the romans in their chariots. We don't care how fast you can "drop gears in".

To come here and "SIGH at people, post sarcastic, negatively toned info is un-necessary, unwanted, and will in the future, result in your removal. You MIGHT try putting thousands of posts up helping folks with their gear set up problems, and EARN some respect from this community. Even then, we're not going to tolerate you speaking to ANYONE like this. Posting 3 posts about how talented you are, and then insulting a contributing member about how much he is screwing it up/doing it wrong etc... is not going to get you very far.

To put it very simply,Please don't do that anymore.

I will have to agree, I myself have had alot of help through my starion turbo swap among other things. Without the help of the people on this forum it could have been a disaster and $$$ wasted. We are all here to learn from each other and to keep or rigs on the road for years to come.

Cheers to you all

Why did you come here in the first place, to get help or to provide help?

Do you even own a Montero/Raider, if so why not update your signature?

We have a lot to offer, but cooping with bad attitudes is not one of them.

Would you like to start over? We're good at forgiveness.

I haven't been setting up gears since chariot days but I have heard that some used gears cannot ever be set up correctly in a different housing. That being said, I'm going on 4 years on a used 4.90 in my 4.636 housing. Also, the ring gear shouldn't have any off-axis play, usually the ring gears have to be heated to get them on the diff, in other words almost a press fit.

I am confident that David know what he is doing and i all ways read his post to learn what i can. I have a lot to learn which is why i read more than i post.

I did not check the pattern before i changed the bearings. Lesson learned.

I did use a 20 ton press with the correct MB bearing driver. They go on quite easy, but i will support the diff haves under the bearing with something in the future to reduce the risk of distorting the housings. Lesson learned.

I do have other differential cases i can try.

I will try and find the high side of the diff case and see if i can correct the problem first.
