Need a Spot
I have a 1989 V6 4-Door Automatic Montero that desperately needs a motor. I have an abundance of 1989 V6 2-door 5 speeds that all have strong motors.

How feasible is it to convert an automatic to a standard? Thoughts appreciated.

Looked hard for a motor and have found nothing yet. Seems silly to have 3 running V6s with rust invading whist the truck with the mint body sits and rots.

Thanks,

Body Damage is Cool
I suppose it could be done, but why? Why not just pull a motor and drop it in? You are trying to get the 4dr back on the road, right?
Conversion would be a lot of work- pedal assembly, master cyl, crossmember, trans mounts, drivelines, etc.

The trucks are basically the same, so everything is there and goes in the same place. I went the other way from standard to auto.

With the engines and gearboxes you have, do you have access to the driveshafts as well? They are a different length.

The pedal cluster will go in with little fuss. The floor needs to be opened up for the shifters. The crossmember for the trans mount will need to be changed out. On a 2nd gen it is the same Xmember that gets swapped left to right if it is for and auto or manual. I can not answer for a 1st gen V6. The 4 cylinder uses different X members for each application.

Why not just put in the engine? Remembering to change the engine to trans spacer...

Are there any issues to be aware of with respect to the truck I want to fix being a Montero and the trucks I have with motors all being Raiders.

I would really rather just keep looking for another V6 Auto engine and put that in, ... but there aren't too many V6 Raiders in Ontario to begin with, and most of those are long dead, and the chances of finding an automatic are seemingly fleeting at best.

I appreciate the input.

Regards,

Well, I can give you some peace of mind hopefully: I had a 5 speed 89 V6 Raider, made for the Canadian market. Nfld salt did the body in. I found an 89 Montero AUTO that had lived most of its life in KC, and had been imported to Canada. I swapped the 5sp Raider's motor into the auto Montero. Zero issues. Straight swap. Done. And still going to this day (buddy of mine has it now - it was formerly known as Betsy III <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> ).

So... just swap the motor into the good Monty body, and call it good?

Another piece of good news.

The clutch pedal and master cylinder from either a Gen1 or Gen2 is a straight bolt-on job. I changed my 1989 Auto to Manual and the pedal came off a Gen2 manual.
