The Troopers just had more changes ware parts will not cross to other years of 1st gen .. I'm sure theres better guys on here that know Troopers better then I do ... If you get the right motor and trans your good ... Get the wrong not so good ...

Mitsu most parts cross in 1st gen and lots of truck parts work too.. Cool seats and lsd in later Mitsu...Easyer for parts for "me" anyhow ..Lots of cheap unloved Dodge/Mitsu stuff around this part of the world ... Turbo motors plundered from sports cars ... so on ......People in Mitsu forums seem to be nicer then most ..

Dig around "Rockauto" some aways helps "me" so see what fits what ...says alot about a vehicle to me

Good info to have - thanks! I've also got to admit I do like the look of the 1st gen Monty more than the Trooper.

I like monteros gen 1 and 2's because most of the parts can swap back and fourth, and way strong drivetrain. The coolest thing about Gen 1's is that you can update the truck with late model parts easily especially on V6 Gen 1's.

this is just hearsay but...

i wanted to get a isuzu trooper back in the day.
I really like the way it looked..

It's just that all my mechanic friends warned me off.

They claimed that the vehicle is a money pit and that everything breaks like crazy. Most mechanics said that the transmission and rear end were very weak.

once again....hearsay

but it convinced me to stay away

Kris you and a trooper would have never worked, GhostTrooper sounds ok but imagine trying to get that on your license plate.

Being a Montero board of course your going to get the Montero side.

All I can say is the either the Montero or Trooper is going to need some work. Every issue with the Montero is well documented on this board. Your going to need about $500 to $1000 to dump into either truck to make it reliable. Don't expect to buy a 20 year old truck for next to nothing and not have issues.

That said, if you follow our lead, you have great truck that you will be proud to drive.

Talking to a guy that has one ('90) that has the engine pulled, redone by a shop, and just needs to be put back together. Body is immaculate from the pic's he's sent - I just need to get from his location to home...he's asking $500.

I didn't figure I'd find anything in perfect condition, and I'm not afraid of a little work so I'm seriously considering it. I've already found a wealth of info here and I'm not afraid to ask for help either so...

Mitsubishi has been building tough military grade vehicles for long time. Thier toughness, reliability, longevity, and ability to win races and fight wars has been well documented.

What has Isuzu done? ...I'm not sure is my only point.

Not to mention that nasty little thing they built during WWII called the Zero...lol.

On an aside - anyone have a ballpark guesstimate on a complete engine rebuild kit for 3.0L (1990) and what "brand" would you recommend?

As an owner of both vehicles in question, there's not a whole lot of difference between the two, to be honest.

In the Trooper, you get height adjustability in the seat which is cool for those of us with long legs. In the Montero you get the suspension seat which is cool on those rough roads at speed.

In the Trooper, you get two rear doors that can be a blessing at times, but the Montero's one BEHEMOTH rear door makes loading less challenging at other times.

Both trucks featured an underpowered 2.6L straight 4 in some models and a mid-sized V6 in others. The Mitsubishi 3.0 is "better" than the Chevy 2.8, but the 2.8 can be easily swapped for a Chevy 3.4 which has more power and a large aftermarket following.

The SWB Montero is a very capable rig, and the Trooper had a very rare equivalent in the RS.

It's a wash, really. Upgradability with Mitsu factory parts is better on the Mitsubishi side since Mitsu offered some cool options in later generations of the Montero, but the Isuzu aftermarket has a larger following with people still making parts for the old rigs on this side of the ocean.

As for what Isuzu has done...that's a whole 'nuther topic.

Good luck!

EDIT: I forgot to add that I rebuilt my Trooper 2.6 for a large amount of money. I rebuilt the top end of my old 2.6 Raider for a larger amount of money. In both, I used aftermarket parts. When I rebuilt the top end of my 3.0, I spent a lot on factory parts, but they seem to last longer. If you're planning on keeping the truck, do the job right the first time and use quality stuff, or you'll just end up doing it again sooner than later. Just my .02
