Hi all.

Ok we got the heads off today and cleaned them up and guaged them. One head has a section where a .003" will pass thru but a .0035" won't. In another area a .0025" will pass but a .003" won't. On the other head a .002" passes is two sections but a .0025" won't.

According to the official shop manual .0019 is the max out it should be. Right?

We also guaged the block surfaces and they are within spec as a .0015" wont pass anywhere. There are no signs at all of any cracks anywhere (WHEW). So I am hoping that a mill of the heads and a reassembly will get Monti back up and rolling.

Cheers,

Pastor M

Try and find a shop that is used to working with aluminum OHC cam heads.

When the deck warped so did the journals that the cam runs in.

What I like doing is to heat the head up in an oven and then put them in a press to straighten them. Straigh is as measured along the cam journals.

When the journals are back in line I re-face the head.

This reduces the amount you have to cut and saves line boring the cam journals. A good shop will be able to do this.

Pastor M,

Off topic question.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, where is Temecual, Ca?
I did a Google search but still not sure of what I'm reading, because there is a Temecula, Ca.

Bad news. Whoever attempted a rebuild on the engine before just milled the bottom of the heats without checking the top where the cam rests. So...these heads are unusable and I am dead in the water until I either get an insane deal on a set of heads, or someone takes pity on me and offers me some money for the Monti and takes over the project.

Yes...I know I am probably very near to having a great vehicle, but now having to find heads is just about the last straw this discouraged "camel's" back can carry.

That stinks! Here are the ones you need...

I wish I had more to offer...I do have a box of gaskets that will probably supply most of what you need to get it back together. Let me know if you need them, and I'll donate them to your project.

Why? What do you see that makes you think they're unuseable?

The gent at the engine machine shop measured them carefully. While he did find similar measurements to the ones I found on the flat part of the head, what he found where the cam rests is that it was so far out of spec. (.0020") that it was not millable and remain anywhere near safe for head integrety. He said if the engine had not overheated that the cams would have sized or broken before long.

What seems to have happened is that on the rebuild the mech simply milled the heads without ever checking where the cams rest. Which is exactly what Kevin warned about a few posts up.

Jon, I do have a full set of upper gaskets for the engine, but thank you for your very kind offer

The heads can often be cut more than spec. There are some tricks but it can be done.

.002 is a lot for the bearing but not a lot for the head.

The cam bores can be line bored and fitted with replacable inserts. Or the head can be straightend to the cam bores.

Or you can get rebuilts using yours as cores. Most times by the time you pay a local shop to do all that work is more cost effective to buy a set of rebuilts.
