The 5-quart jugs of Pennzoil Platinum synthetic oil are $20 and you get a $15 mail-in rebate in the form of a wally world gift card. Limit 2 per household, ends August 31. The PP oil is well regarded on the BITOG forum so I'm gonna grab a couple jugs of 10w30 for the 4runner, and use the rebates on ammo.

Is that some sort of Exxon/Castrol collaboration?

I haven't bought Pennzoil in years. Not since my 'scort days. The subie gets OEM, the Hyundai gets Val-o-line, and the taco gets Mobil-1. Maybe I'll try some of this since the price is obviously right.

That's quite the variety. My car gets whatever is on sale I know it's a young'un at only 110,000 miles

Mobile is a city in Alabama. Mobil 1 is a synthetic oil, and Syntec is a Castrol product name. Which do you mean?

But srsly, if any of your vehicles use a 5w30, the PP supposedly tests way better than Mobil 1 in used oil analyses. Something about high iron (not good, indicates cylinder wear) in the 5w30 Mobil 1 samples. It's been a while since I looked at the UOAs and I'm not sure if a consensus was ever reached on the significance of those results or if it was just a random fluky batch or a weird set of tests, but there was quite the ruckus about that. I think it was confined to the 5w30.

I've never actually used PP, yet. I've got M1 0w40 in the Miata (the 0w helps eliminate hydraulic lash adjuster ticking on startup) and don't plan to change that. I am sending in a sample for a UOA after having done several track days on that oil, so I'll see how it's holding up. But I've never seen the 0w40 in 5-qt jugs at wally world, best I've done locally is 5 quarts plus a Mobil 1 filter (very good filters) for $30 at Advance.

The 10w30 in the 4runner, I am open to trying the PP this time instead of M1. The analyses I've seen show that PP is at least as good as M1. Rotella T synthetic, German Castrol, Redline and Amsoil all have their fans too, but there's only one top quality synthetic on sale for $1/qt after rebate.

The Subaru gets one at regular intervals, as does the Hyundai. The taco gets <100 miles put on it per month these days, so it goes a bit longer.
