There is a thread on here about putting dual transfer cases on a Montero, but its most popular with the Toyota pickup guys. Mainly because Marlin makes all kinds of kits to do it fairly easily.

Running 2 transfer cases increases your crawl ratio greatly.

When you have 1 transfer case calculating your crawl ratio goes like this:
Quote

Multiply your first gear, times your low range transfer case gear, times your differential gear. For example if you have:

3.93 first gear in your transmission
2.28 low range gear in your transfer case
4.10 gears in your differentials
Your crawl ratio is 3.93 X 2.28 X 4.10 = 37:1

Now add a 2nd transfer case to the equation:

Quote

If you have two transfer cases then you also multiply the number by the second case like this:

3.93 first gear in your transmission
2.28 low range gear in your first transfer case
4.70 low range gear in your second transfer case
5.29 gears in your differentials
Your crawl ratio is 3.93 X 2.28 X 4.70 X 5.29 = 223:1

And of course your crawl ratio is a numerical way of evaluating your ability to crawl over obstacles, etc etc. The greater your crawl ratio the more torque you have to crawl over rocks etc.
