Getting the Wheeling Fever
sorry you guys, ive been off the grid for a while. Since the last time that i posted we have been to Eugene oregon, Mt hood, crater lake, the lava beds in northern CA and the craters of the moon. here are pictures. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/077-1.jpg[/img][/image] this is us on mt hood. we climbed to 8300 ft. it was awesome. you can see the trooper in this one if you try. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/074-1.jpg[/img][/image] next we went to crater lake. i highly recommend it. i jumped in. can you see the agony on my face? the water was 35 degrees. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/140-1.jpg[/img][/image] it was cold as hell. if i had a sound clip it would get me kicked of the forum smile.awe also climbed mt thelsen. the peak is at 9155 ft. it was beautiful. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/170.jpg[/img][/image] it was really cool. by the way sorry that this is so brief. i will try to fill in more later. any way after that we went to the lava beds. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/lava019.jpg[/img][/image] this is my little brother being hard core. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/lava021.jpg[/img][/image] me imitating him smile.
from there we headed to the craters of the moon in idaho. we had all kinds of fun with that. "where are we going?" "idaho". "i know your the ho but where are we going?" any way what can you expect right? the most fun was on the way. we did a lot of back road driving and almost got stuck in the snow. here are the pics. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/lava057.jpg[/img][/image] the trooper down a muddy road. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/lava072.jpg[/img][/image] the trooper stuck in 8 inches of wet snow. we went up a small trail to get here. the last car stopped about a 1/$ mile back. troopers are sweet right? [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/lava078.jpg[/img][/image] john in a not so winter outfit next to an unstuck trooper. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/lava079.jpg[/img][/image] just to show how deep the snow was. dont laugh to hard if you are from here. any way. we are in salt lake now. i will fill in on all this more when i get the chance. just to top it all off. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/Lava2044.jpg[/img][/image] the universe tearing apart over salt lake. my master plan has begun. HAHAHAhHAHAHAhAh, MWAHAhAhAhAAHAha. any way, more from doctor evil later smile.

Couple of ideas, though they are a ways from Bryce Canyon:

SE Utah has the Mecca for off-roading, in the Moab area. You could wheel there for a couple weeks without getting bored. And Arches NP is just down the road.

Elephant Hill trail at Canyonlands NP is a moderate trail that is very cool and scenic, do the short hikes to the Joint Trail and the Colorado/Green rivers confluence. No dogs, though.

What do want to know? I've covered over 100 trails each year for the past 3 years in Utah, Arizona, & Colorado. If you are coming to Salt Lake Via the north you could first hit up Providence Canyon which is in Providence Utah (rated 5.0 on a 10 scale). It takes you to the top of Mt Logan. You can return via Millville Canyon which drops you into Hyrum (rated 4.0) both trails are featured frequently in various mags amoungst them 4wd & SU Mag mainly due to Phil Howell being a resident of that area. Once you complete those two trails you have pretty much nothing until you hit the Salt Lake Valley. Two short trails are 22 miles west of Lehi that being Rattlesnake (5.0) and Contrictor (7.0) and an optional obstacle in between them known as Waynes World (solid 9.0). Once you are done there if you are heading to Canyonlands via Route 6 you would be doing yourself a massive injustice if you did not hit the San Rafael Swell. It has everything Moab has to offer and then some. Run Buckhorn Wash (2.0) which starts 1 mile north of Castle Dale. It has a gargantuen pictograph panel as well as a dinosaur track and inscription from Matt Warner part of the Butch Cassidy Gang. It as well has just of of it the MK Tunnels were NORAD was going to be until it failed the bomb testing. After you are done there stay in the swell and run Fix it Pass (5.0) then Devils Racetrack (6.0), double back to run Eva Conaver (5.0) to Eagle Canyon(4.0) this will dumb you right onto I-70. You as well would have an optional run there of Copper Globe Mine. Once you exit the Swell you could head down to Canyonlands. All three areas of Canyonlands require a permit, the maze can take years to get (I just got back from that trip). The best section of Canyonlands would be the Needles District. Run Elephant Hill, to Bobbys Hole, to Beef Basin, to Cottonwod Wash to the highway, then head up Hotel Rock. This area has Anazasi Cliff Dwellings all over the place if you know where to look. O'yeah don't miss Butler Wash while you are in the area, it's an Anazasi city. I can go on and on and on. Let me know what time frame you are traveling because that may limit you do to the 70' of snow we get annually in our mountains, let me knoe the highway route you are taking and I can map out a perfect route for you where you are rarely on the pavement. I'll even send it to you in a gpx file so you can upload it to a GPS. Also if you happen to be in our backyard you are more than welcome to join our club on one of our monthly multi-day runs. They are always phenominal http://www.zutah.com

Getting the Wheeling Fever
we finally did some more off roading. after getting some forest service maps we started on the fremont atv trail. it really isn't all that hard core but it was fun. i think that we went about ten or fifteen miles yesterday and then another fifteen or twenty today. we actually spent the night at an over look above Panguitch utah. it was pretty cool. any way, here are some pictures. oh and we got our third flat of the trip. [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad003.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad004.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad005.jpg[/img][/image]
that was pretty lame
[img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad006.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad007.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad008.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad009.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad012.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad013.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad014.jpg[/img][/image] [img][image]http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv25/SAW32rally/offroad015.jpg[/img][/image]
i was actually impressed with how well the trooper took that much flex. every other 4x4 i have ever driven would have spun and i would have had to hit it with more speed but i was able to stop in the middle to take pics. any way, thats what we have done. ill post more later.
