Getting the Wheeling Fever
dunno if you've tried this, but this is what i did (in about 2 minutes total time): went to searchtempest.com and put your main zipcode in (for portland) with a 200 mile radius and the search text 'mitsubishi montero.' about the 2nd or 3rd (out of 13 cities) listed shows a silver/silver 89 v6 which looks bone stock / asking price is $500, needs motor work or a motor (which is MUCH simpler than a bunch of body work on a 20 y/o 4x4, trust me). anyway, i didn't continue down the list, but it's something anybody can do. btw - this one's in ridgefield, washington, wherever that is from you. good luck with your search. i'm sure you'll find a good one somewhere close.

I'm in the same boat as mecha sky. Out here in the heartland there just aren't all that many to be found, in any condition. So I've been searching ever farther afield and I may have to go the same route - find one out in AZ or some such and either fly out and drive it back OR have someone drive it out and buy 'em a ticket home and little green for their troubles.

By the way Mecha - try this one out;

http://www.hankshelper.com/

It works even better than Searchtempest.com and you can narrow things down quite a bit.

Cool, I'd never heard of Searchtempest or Hankshelper. I have Craigs Pal and that works realy good for me.

I will definatly consder getting a Montero with a bad motor. Infact I went out and looked at one 3 times two weeks ago.

It had a low end knock which came and went. The guy had both heads replaced too. The guy wanted $500 for it. But it didnt run too good and I wanted to make sure that the 4wd worked too.

When i climbed under it, I saw mud jamed packed in every knook and cranny. All of the plates which cover motors, trannys and so on were bent and tweeked. Drive line had a crease in it.

I got to talkin with the owner about all this mud and damage, he told me that his boys went bogging. Thats when I realized why the motor was smoked.

I backed away from it. Scared I'd find other aboused components. I feel that in this case I did the right thing.

But If I could find a daily driver which simply had the unfortunate luck of blowing its top! Hell I'll buy that right now!

if you're in kansas city, try looking down in okc and tulsa. i've seen dozens of gen 1 monteros and raiders within the last 5-6 months listed in those two general areas. i noted this fact since it's a 10-12 hour drive for me, and that put them out of a decent travel range for me to go look at any of them (since i still need some blue sheetmetal pretty badly). it's worth a shot anyway. jack b :-)

btw - i use hankshelper quite a bit too, but i also like the searchtempest guy (started out as craigshelper) as he adds 'helper stuff' to his search engine all the time. he really works at it, but hey, there's all really helpful sites.
