Ok I ran a search but couldn't find any similar symptoms. My fuel gauge hasn't worked since I bought my 1988 Trooper. The low fuel light comes on and off but not in relation to the fuel level. I get like 19mpg and fill up after around 350 miles been lucky so far I have been told that my sending unit is bad. We have tested wires, fuses, relays and gauge from front to back. My question is... JC Whitney sells a $425 fuel pump assembly and Autozone has an $85 fuel pump. I get fuel so pump is working. But will either of these products solve the gauge/lite issue? It is a minor inconvenience but soon to have teenager driving and don't want her getting stuck IF I let her borrow my Trooper Any takers on this issue. Thanks ahead of time.

I'll have a go at this. You say your fuel gauge doesn't work, and that you've been told you have a bad sending unit. Next you're talking about replacing the fuel pump to cure the problem.
You're dealing with two entirely different areas here. The fuel pump has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. You've said that your Trooper runs well, that you just don't have more than a vague idea/guess at how much fuel it has. If it runs well driving down the road, then the fuel pump is okay. If the fuel gauge, the one there on the dashboard, doesn't work,it could be one of several things. The sending unit might very well be bad, the wiring could be bad, a fuse might be bad, a relay might be bad.
Always start with the easy stuff. Check your fuses. Be sure they're good. Check the relay. Change it with a similar relay there under the hood. Check the wiring, run a continuity test if you're able. Finally, look at the sending unit. It has to be inside the fuel tank. You might have to drop the tank to get it. If you drop the tank, wait til it's empty.
Of course, you might have a dead gauge. All these things need to be tested.

Sorry to be so confusing about this. I appreciate your patience too. Correct I have no issues driving. I only have a guesstamite as to how much fuel I have. I mentioned the fuel pump only because all of the diagrams that I have found make it look as if the pump and sending unit are one.
As for easy stuff first I appreciate that approach a great deal.An experienced mechanic friend of mine and I started at the in dash gauge and worked are way forward to the relays/fuses and backward to the fuel tank. Every thing seemed to be ok.
Question: Are the gauge and the indicator light(center of tach-speedo cluster) independent of each other? My indicator light will usually go off when I fill all the way up then comes back on after a short while, but the guage needle doesn't move. Also I have not been able to locate a sending unit at any of the DIY parts stores, does any one have a suggestion as to where I can find a suitable replacement?
Again I am very glad that this forum exists I have been able to learn alot about Troopers here. But what is Gen 1 and Gen 2 where is the manufacture date break?
Thanks

Update on this. Sorry it took so long to get back to y'all on this I really like all the info and advice here and need to make it a point to be here more often even when i don't have issues!!! Any way my trooper finally died on me one day, I had it towed to Japan Auto here in Greenville,SC and they did a fantastic job for me. It turns out that I had about 2" of sludge in the fuel tank. They dropped, drained and rinsed the tank, installed a new pump and sending unit. And SHAZAM I am running smooth and true! I no longer have a 40 minute leash.LOL. And my fuel gauge is working properly. While I try to fix what i can I'm glad I let someone else drop the gas tank and clean it out. Thanks to everyone who has offered solutions to my posts.
