Thanks to all the replies on last problem.I now have a 258 that runs new motor.now I've move to the drive train.I've got a 3-speed trans. in it,everything works fine as far as trans. and transfer case, the only problem is that going downhill in first gear and low range I'm constantly riding the brake because it run to fast.It has a low range in it that runs faster than some high ranges I've had. What do I need to change to slow it down? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

How high does the engine Rev? If something (sol vac or other related engine management system) is holding the throttle open, you could disable it. But if I remember right you arn't running a carter feedback carb.
That's the problem with automatic transmissions and low gear. The torque converter that lets the engine rev up before it stalls giving you that little boost off the line, also lets the drive train rev up before there is significant torque on the engine. On modern cars with a lock up torque converter you can hot wire the TCC (torque converter clutch) and get about the same effect as a manual transmission. Unfortunately, your 3 speed auto doesn't have a TCC.
You can swap out the 3 speed auto for a 5 speed manual... How much is down hill engine braking worth to you?

sorry about that,I have a 3-speed manual trans. All I have on my carb. is vacuum.I replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump and distributor,it runs like a dream but I need to so it down in low range.I thought it might be the vacuum advance but it's not opening until I give it gas.

Do you know your transfer case and 1st gear ratio?
For 31's, that's about right for a stock vehicle.
