08-22-09 Follow-Up Test
Test RPM CO2 O2 HCmx HCmea COmx COmea NOmx NOmea
15mph 1969 13.9 1.6 118 62 0.68 0.00 999 3102
25mph 1939 14.5 0.8 98 42 0.87 0.00 859 2455
Result - GROSS POLLUTER/GROSS POLLUTER

There's a possibility that the converter was not fully warmed, but from the readings, especially ar 25 MPH, I'm seeing O2 left over with HC present, and the CO2 readings are showing good mixture control along with high NOX, I'd almost bet money that the Cat-Con is inop.

"...10-22-07...Followed this test with new high flow catalytic converter..."

These are the units with the high failure rate for NOX because they skimped on material, especially the Rhodium that catalyzes the NOX. Usually these had a two year gaurantee, at best. The new CA legal replacements must meet OEM specs, have a CARB EO# and have to carry a 5 year warranty.

Hope this helps!

Are the Bosal OE models just as good or should I just let the muffler shop put something on as they would probably be held to selling these units which are Cal CARB compliant.

Just purchased a new oxygen sensor as well and installing it as soon as it arrives.

Also thinking of replacing the fuel filter. Any recommendations?

They should have installed part # 39004 from their website, the list price is $376.81 and fits most Monteros from '83 to '95. Make sure the converter has the part number and CARB EO# stamped on the shell, your warranty should be for 5 years.
