3VZE Timing Tensioner Swap #960431 08/25/09 03:08 AM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
So here's my dilemma, I have just purchased a running 3VZE from a 1993 4x4 pickup that I intend to swap into a 1990 2wd pickup. I have been prepping both motors and know that I am going to have to swap out the oil pan and pickup, since the 1993 motor has a 4x4 oil cooler and the 2wd did not have the cooler, I will have to swap the block-off plate and block plug also. The heart of the deal is that the 1993 has the hydraulic tensioner setup and the 1990 truck has the spring type tensioner, so since I am swapping most of the components from the 90 onto the 93 block, could I also swap the timing tensioner setup.

I have the little spring holder tab from the 1990, and the other parts from the 1990, but I think because of the different type tensioners, the belts are slightly different. I would be getting the whole she-bang, belt tensioner, idlers, etc. so if this is possible, I would be doing it all and not trying to mix and match.

I am mainly considering this in order to keep it as much 1990 as I can in case it ever leaves my hands one day, somebody isn't wigged out when things don't look right.

I have been digging and can't really find any information on this, so I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Tucker

Do you have the VIN for the donor vehicle? If so, go to www.toyodiy.com and look at the parts reference and compare the part numbers to make sure of what you're working with.

The dealer can also look up some of these parts for you as well to verify. They 'prefer' you do have the other VIN, if possible.

Also a reminder we have the 93 FSM sticky'd here at the top of this section if you need it.

Thanks, that site is great, I used the VIN's and I checked on most of the parts for the timing belt and it appears that the cam gears are the same, but the belts, and tensioners are in-fact different, I briefly looked at the water pumps, but I already know they can be different depending on whether you have the oil cooler or not.

Since I know that the parts are different, my question is still, has anyone swapped the later for the early style. My research seems to point to the only block/head difference being that they added a whole in the later model heads to accommodate the new style tensioner. That being said, if I were to go to a parts supplier like 1sttoyota or others and order all of the timing components as if I were simply doing the timing belt on the 1990 but installed all of that onto the 1993 block, that should work, right. I have the block to the point where I am ready to start putting shiny new stuff back on, so I'd appreciate any input.

If anyone knows a good toyota service/tech department that I could call and ask, I would gladly do so.

Oh and I have already downloaded most of the 1993 manual and was actually looking at that manuals link and thinking about getting the two day membership to get some of the wiring diagrams. Does anyone know if they have a resource like that for 1st gen 4Runners, I got an 1988 that I would love to get some tech info for.

Thanks, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

As far as calling someone, that's what google is for.

For the '88, we used to have an off-site host. Your best bet might be over at yotatech's FSM listings. Otherwise the closest thing you could download is for a 1990 from techinfo.toyota.com
