Getting the Wheeling Fever
1952 M38 with a Buick V6. I was driving along and the signal lights failed to work. Checked all lights and the 4 way flashers and brake lights didn't work either. Turns out the main harness coming down the steering column came apart, but when I hooked it back up everything works except the signal lights. The bulbs are good, replaced the flasher and they still don't work. I wanted to take apart the signal light arm on the steering column but I can't figure out how to take it apart. The column is likely out of a mid 1970's CJ with tilt steering. Any suggestions?

Gerry

If it looks like this one it is a 77 and later switch. About 35 bucks on the internet..

Thanks Jim,

So how do I take apart the steering column to get at this switch and wiring bundle. This column has also has a mechanism at the top to prevent auto theft. You insert a key in the slot, push down a lever and the steering wheel comes off. When I do that, there are four "star" fasterers, but they just keep spinning when I turn them, without coming undone.

Jim, this Vehicle Security Device is made by Grant - the same outfit that makes after-market steering wheels. It allows you to take off the steering wheel to help prevent theft. I did find their website and sent them an email asking for a diagram on how this stuff comes off the column. I haven't got a response yet. It's actually a slick system. You turn a key (separate from the ignition system), push down a lever and then remove the wheel. Replace the wheel with a special cap that locks in place to keep the rain out. I have no top on the jeep and it would be very easy to steal.

Jim was right. I had to buy some special tools to get the steering column apart - I had a couple of damaged wires that had corroded so I fixed those and cleaned up the switch - it had lots of crud in there. Everything works. Thanks everyone.

Gerry
