Thanks for all th replies. I'm buds with John Monin (wrenchmonkey) and Hanz@GZP. Known them for years. We are all old school 3000GT guys.
I've done a handfull of 3.5L swaps in 3000GT's. Easy cake except for the oil pan issue. That is one of my biggest concerns with the Montero, although I think a 2" body lift would help out quite a bit with that and other clearance issues.
0778drz110, well have to get together some time and hit the mud. I try to hit the mud at least twice a month. Any good spots up there? I have a couple down here.
FrankR, sweet setup you have there. I love the SOHC. Great motor. I had a 3000GT with a SOHC in it. I eventually swapped in a dohc twin turbo, but the sohc was great for reliability. If you have 20 minutes to kill here is a video of me killing the sohc. Pretty entertaining...
http://www.import-power.com/vids/Pandadeath_3SXPerformance.asfWhat Monteros had a 3.0L dohc?
TOASTY, would love to see some pics of the 3.5TT Pajero!
fasteddie, you have a good point with the fuel and timing maps. I could definitely tune around them, but I'd rather not have a bunch of electronics plastered in this car. This makes me lean more toward a 3.0L straight out of a 3000GT. I can pick up a wrecked vr4 for around $1000 and have most of the parts I need. Run it with stock injectors, pistons, coil pack, turbos, and ecu. Wire in the atx tcu and it should run like a champ. With an upgraded fuel pump I can run 15psi on pump.
If I go this route I'd still need to figure out an oil pan, oil pickup tube, and upper plenum. Perhaps I could use all of those from a 3.5L montero. Does anyone have any good pics from a 3.5L engine bay?
One way or another I'm gonna have to fab all the turbo plumbing. Not a huge deal, I can do all that myself. Just takes time. I'd have to find a good spot for the intercooler. Where do you 2.6T guys put the intercooler? Exhaust work is cake. I'd go with a 3" mandrel bent with no cat.
On a interesting side note, I blew up the SOHC today. Was out in the woods WOT for a while and she got hot. Tried to drive her home and was only able to make it half way. Compression #'s: 60,65,60 20, 65, 110
When I pour coolant into the radiator it pours out from all over the place haha. Oh well, time to pull the heads off I guess.
