Jamez, check out this thread on the V6 dual piston brake upgrade:

http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.p...rue#Post1162472

Every time I talk to my buddy, he comments how much better these are than the stock Gen 1 4 cyl. front brakes!

We'd recently done a friends rear shoes and cylinders on his 84. This helped a little, but when we replaced the master it will easily lock all 4 on pavement now and all sponginess gone.
Don't overlook that tired master just b'c it isn't loosing fluid.

The only thing about gen1 brakes I ever found iffy was that the rear drums could wear to the point that the adjusters had no more stroke, and just slowly fade away to nothing slowing you down back there. You can get enough adjustment on the ebrake cables to take up more slop than the shoe adjusters, and if you don't take off the drum (sometimes a pita), you never notice and just gripe about cruddy gen1 brakes...

After I put tall tires on my 87 the factory system seemed too weak to stop from highway speeds. Firm pedal all corners working corectly.

It may also be I'm kind of particular about having really good brakes, who knows.

What really made a differance was putting on the V6 booster.

My 88 stopped a lot better than my 87. I think the factory had a good reason to upgrade them one step further for the V6 in 89.

About the drum brakes, I didn't know mine were worn and were not braking at all. How did I find out? Couple winters ago I could not stop on snow/ice unless I was in 4wd. Definately a scary thing coming to an intersection, the speed or lack thereof did not seem to matter, it would just push itself along.

So basically you need the V6 calipers/MC for the front and the entire MS rear for the back and you've got the best braking improvement for the buck? I love factory boltons, just swapped in late model brakes on my '95 Mustang, just a little bit of grinding and it all came together.
