OK here is a new question for you Montero experts.
Please describe the pros & cons of the 4 cyl 4G54 and the 6 cyl 6G72 engines offered in the Gen-1 Monteros.
I'm curious to know if one motor is better than then other. Obviously Horsepower is slightly more on the V6, but not much more. I've read that the V6 has about 143hp and the Inline-4 has about 131hp. (Are thoes figures accurate?)
Do any of you know how much a LWB Montero weighs?
Stun me with your knowlege. Thanks <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Here is one more question I need to ask.
There is an 89 Montero here localy which says it has a bad auto trans.
How strong are Mitsubishi automatic transmissions? Have you ever had one go out? Would you risk going to the junk yard to buy a used one?
I called the local trans rebuild guy and he quoted me between $1300-$1500 to rebuild it. I looked online and many rebuild outfits are charbing about the same, some even more than that.
thanks.

Im not sure about the HP rating on the 4 Cyl. But I would steer clear of it unless you plan to turbo charge it. The the 2.6 4 cyl is Carbureted, which works well when the carb is in good working order. In my experience the Fuel injected V6 is smoother and easier to keep it running right. The carb has a million vacuum lines that i would not want to deal with. But thats just me...
From what I understand your looking for a 4 door which is only available with the 6 cyl anyway...

Thanks for the info. I did not know that the 4 only came w/ a carb. This means that it has less power than I thought. So this is great info.
Knowing that the tranny's are stout is great news too.
Do any of you know how much the Montero 4door weighs?? Just curious

2.6 has about 109hp and about 150frlbs of torque. As a carby motor. If you do the easy tubo conversion, you have 206hp and I guess 250ftlbs of torque, and put to shame the 3.0's 140ish hp and 150-160ftlbs of torque. The 4 will pull with the 6 up to about 3500rpms, then falls steadily behind.

Montero 4dr weight: When I drive my 89 4dr onto the scales after going to the dump/landfill, me, the rig and a small trailer weigh in at ~4250. Subtract about 190# for me and maybe 500# for the traler and you have a good estimate of scale weight. Maybe someone can add the real scale weight. My est. is about 3500#.

Really? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> My 2.6l revs like crazy after 4k rpm doesn't seem to have much more power up there though <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> . Even in the mountains I still don't have to wind out the motor up steep hills, I call do almost all at 3k rpm. Unlike most of the 22r/e toyotas around there <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> I have found it does take corners well...maybe why it won dakar a bunch of times <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> How much power are we looking at with a 38 Weber carb and 2" exhaust with a snorkel? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> OP: There all good as long as you maintain your vehicle <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
