Dear all

I am on a Gen 1 LWB with a Starion engine. Rear axle's been changed. Can anyone please direct me to a reliable and cheap source for a set of new or used rear parking brake shoes for the Montero locker axle with disc brakes and the drum brake shoes are within the disc brakes? Both my axle shafts are identified by '80' at the outer end of the shafts. I have no idea which year my axle is and which model of Pajero exactly. I suspect it's a V6 SR early 90s or the 2.8L diesel model.

Appreciate for any directions or if you have a pair of decent ones for sale, let me know. My pair are just about shot. Thanks.

My axle also has "80" on the flange and has the 9" ring, which was available with LSD or an air Locker. (I can get you the 9" part numbers tommorrow if that is the axle you need).

You may find good shoes at a salvage/recycle yard. Without abuse I can't believe these would ever wear out, try to do an internet salvage yard search.

these numbers are for the "9.5 inch" locking differential:

you will need:

2 MB618916 primary shoes
1 MB618914 left secondary shoe
1 MB618915 right secondary shoe

These numbers can be cross referanced at a parts store for aftermarket brands.
They cost about $18.00 US each shoe at Mitsu internet dealers over here. These are the parking brake shoes in the USA for the Generation 2 long wheel base with the 9.5 inch factory Air locker .
The Gen 2 rear axle is about 3 inches wider than the Gen 1 with drum brakes that the USA got. Different continents got different options.
These shoes are not much more expensive from the Mitsu dealer than a discount off brand parts store , plus you will know they will fit properly.

Hi Krzyday

Wouldn't the numbers be similar for both 9" and 9.5" rings? I will need the 9" part numbers if they are different. Thanks alot!

Regards

Lester

Hi Lester,
I do not have listings for a gen 1 disc axle in the USA caps.

The part numbers for the later axle shoes are two, MB618916 and one each MB618914 & MB618915. These are listed for both axle sizes of a Gen2 and Sport.

Cheers, Charlie

Thanks Charlie! That will be helpful. I believe this axle will be from a Gen 2 Sport V6 model.

I can't get anything on your photo site. But that's probably my fault...Maybe you can put some photos here on "The Wire",,,I can't tell you how to do it though( I'm a neanderthal).
I was under the impression that yours is a Gen 1 2.6 4cly, (fuel injected?) with rear leaf springs.
It probably has a rear axle from what is sold here as an early 97-99 Montero Sport. The Montero Sport over here is a totally different frame and body from a Gen 2,,,but the rear axles are the same width as Gen 2s. The difference in the USA is all our Gen2s have coil rear springs and M. Sports had leaf springs from 97-99 and coils 2000 -2004. Some M.Sports had drum rear brakes , some disc. All Gen 2s had rear disc.
One way to tell for sure if the previous owner put a wider/ later model axle is to measure the distance from the spring mount pad on the axle to the end of the axle housing at the brake backing plate and compare that measurement to a stock montero. That's were the extra length will show up as the frames are same width at that point on the Gen 1 and Gen 2.

Of coarse, every continent got different setups and same units are even a different year model. Other countrys have got factory optional equipment and accessories that we can't even special order over here .
I like to see the different setups you get on your side of the Pacific.

Hi Dave

no, it's my fault. The photo site's been dead for awhile and I did not have the time to do anything about it.

I've got a Gen 1 and swapped the stock LSD axle for a locker axle with '80' at the shaft ends. I used back the stock spring leaf set up from the Gen 1 and welded all of it back on the transplanted axle including the rear stabilizer.

The engine has been swapped out to a Starion 89' and the transmission has been swapped to a 2.5L diesel transmission.

The front end brakes have been transplanted from a Gen 1 V6 model.

Above are the general stuff that have been done. Too many to mention here.

Thanks. That's Goodyear Studded Sure Grip. nice to use but wear rate is crazy. Gone within a year cos compound is really soft.

Larry, is that your new British accent?

Lester -

Nice rig and I like those tires, too (note the lack of sophistication here in SC - GA boys have more British lineage).
