PS (this works).

With valve cover off, before you start loosening those bolts, wrap a ratchet strap from center of one side of head, down below oil pan or axle, up to other side of head in the center.
Ratchet that baby down real tight.
That will keep the head gasket squeezed between the block and head to keep from damaging the existing gasket.
Sometimes the head will want to seperate otherwise.
