Body Damage is Cool
Thanks for the under-vehicle shots. I put a new cat, mid-pipe and muffler in my 4runner and was thinking about how to do the tailpipe. I made the mid-pipe out of mandrel bent sections, but it's just aluminized steel welded up with my MIG welder. Now that I know that I don't need to make the wacky bends that the factory tail-pipe had I can relax <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> -- Matt

<BTW> I'm happy to say that I am able to keep my 4runner off the road this winter as well.

Roll Me Over
It sounds great when i start it up every other week, LOL.

It's waiting on jackstands for me to plate the frame, drop the new axle in it, fix the leak ( i think the water pump is faulty), get it aligned, and e-tested/plated. Going to take some time off work this spring to get it back together... bought a house and was just too busy last year. I told my dad it will only go to my place under it's own power, and he wants it out! A bit of motivation to get r' done. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I will be posting updates soon.

Here is what i did on it last year (spent a loooong time waiting for parts / etc... ugh)..

Got some pics now,

Lower control arm, sway bar, etc. out... driver side came out easy. snapped both sway bar links... no biggie, everything comes out easier that way LOL.

Spindle on the ground... upper BJ came out easy with the right tool (thank you partsource for free puller rentals, note: do not get the "big" balljoint kit, get the "front end service kit (#3 i believe), it has everything you need. The lower balljoint was seized in the spindle and i had to use a puller to "push" it out... (2-jaw 6" PA special).

Buddy wrenching off the control arm bolts... this is the one that was seized... neighbour came and helped me torch it out....

So we heated up the bushings with a torch and popped the ends off. Then i used the puller again to push the sleeve through

Pryed out the rubber bushing with a flat screwdriver...

and voila!

My fun getting the t-bar bolt off... what a [censored]... it moved 1/2"... then snapped.. meh no biggie.

here is everything in a manual hub

It's really easy to rebuild, all you need it a set of needlenose pliers and a snap ring plier... new parts needed are the two gaskets and o-ring seal.. make sure not to loose the ball bearing and spring when you are cleaning everything! Will take pics of assembly when i get to it...

Just waiting for a few more parts, going to buffalo next weekend to pick up my rockauto order... wow is stuff alot cheaper in the states... i'm replacing everything basically, lol.... except for pitman arm and idler (which i will when i can afford the TotalChaos one..) I'm buying all my parts from rockauto and autopartsway.ca... except of course for dealer only items. Don't even bother asking the dealer for prices on most parts, they are insane. These two companies carry a vast amount of OEM parts anyways, but for 1/2 to 1/5 the cost... i'm not going to worry....

Got all my front end parts in... still moving slowly...

Cutting the UCA to fit the BJ spacer

All i did was make two slits in the arm about 1/2" deep, then used vice grips like a "can opener" until it all fit. Easy.

Pressed the new UCA bushing in, since it's longer than the sleeve, i had to use the trusty 54mm socket for proper clearance, see it's not just for axle nuts!
[Linked Image]

lastly, burning the sleeves out of the old bushings... wd40 and a propane torch does the trick...

A few notes:

FSM is great for torque spec's / etc. Must have.

Do NOT buy mevotech parts!!! the LCA bushings were fine, but the tie rod ends are GARBAGE!!!

here is my front suspension parts list:

- Energy suspension bushings (upper)
- Mevotech lower bushings (will swap to the energy one day, when i have the energy...ahhhh)
- Energy suspension sway bar bushings and end links
- Sankei 555 upper and lower BJ's
- BJ spacers and sway bar drop
- OEM yota inner tie rods
- TRW (sankei 555) outer tie rods
- koyo front wheel bearings
- new oem gaskets / seals for hubs
- Redline synthetic high speed MP grease (for wheel bearings and hubs)
- Beck arnley inner oil seal (made in japan) - mine were completely gone!!!
- OEM toyota backing plates
- OME front shocks
- Goodridge stainless braided lines
- Powerslot rotors
- Hawk LTS pads
- New caliper hardware (centric)
- New oem toyota LCA adjusting bolts / nuts... 1 had to be cut out, others were very rusty
- CK truck parts nylon steering stops (ebay... should last 100x longer than stock)
- Would like to get power steering box rebuilt, and TC idler arm... next year...

Thanks! Finally got some time to start working on the 89 again. Ripped out the rear axle / leaf springs and shackles. Hopefully going to pull the gas tank, brake and fuel lines and some misc stuff on sunday/monday. Then its peel all the rubberized undercoat get rid of the rust (scrape, flap disc where heavy and sandblast), plate the frame, then coat it with rust bullet. Then to prep rear axle for armor, traction bar and e-locker. Then, bolt up the new gas tank with walboro 255 pump, budbuilt crossmember and traction bar, new rear axle, OME suspension, mod the muffler, etc etc... Cant wait.
Stock length bilsteins were limiting my downtravel... Likely beacause of the longer shackles. For stock shackles they would be perfect length.

Axle out... Ooooh rust, cant wait to get rid of you..
[Linked Image]
Another angle, axle came out fairly easily, thankfully the spring bushings were swapped 6 years ago so they werent too difficult nor seized. Snapped a few bolts but im junking those parts anyways. No more lspv for me...
