I changed the motor oil today and took a look at the Tranny fluid. It's a little to reddish blown for me. No issues with the transmission, I do have high miles at 172K.

I've driven a stick for the last 10 years. Whats the recommended service?

The service interval for a 91 was every 30k miles to change the auto trans fluid. I'm sure they are all about the same. If you dont know how long its been I wouldnt recomend changing it with that many miles it could do more harm than good

I feel the same way. I don't like the idea of new fluid in an old tranny. Maybe a new filter and a flush but I wouldn't change it all out. Let others chime in. This is just how I feel.

Just curious how you'd flush and filter a trans without changing all the fluid...as usual, I'm confused.

Change the filter. Put the old fluid back in it. Take it to a shop and have it flushed. I know the new filter is going to soak up some of the dirt and grime but its not going to get as dirty as the old one already is. Like I said..... this is just me.

Honestly, if your not having any trouble out of it I wouldn't mess with it.

Ok, it was the flushing part that I didn't understand. I thought flushing pushed the old fluid out and left fresh in it's place. I'm all jacked up...

No problem. Its just a machine that keeps cycling the fluid through external filters. My brother had it done when his tranny started slipping and it didn't help. It was a 5.0 mustang. You could put it in drive and it would sit all day long and not move unless you touched the gas. Touch the gas and it would take off with a hard jerk and slip through the gears. Looking for something to just get him by, I put a bottle of lucas stop slip in it..... That was 8 years ago!!!! He still drives it everyday with zero problems. I REALLY cant believe it and wouldnt if I hadn't done it myself.

Les, I'm going to change mine and I have a few more miles than you do, unless of course someone comes up with a good reason why not to.

I to am confused Jon. When I own a Bronco I had it flushed, they use all new fluid or at least I paid for new fluid.

So JAgnew8 please tell us how to flush a transmission without new fluids and why you do it. I'm never to old to learn a trick or two and maybe save my transmission.

Just read your updated post but still don't understand you saying keep the old fluid. Why?

This is EXACTLY why I don't trust those places, Michael. I've ALWAYS thought flush and fill was cycling a chemical or clean fluid through to get all the crap out and then leave nice new fluid inside. Coupled with a filter change, the trans gets a new lease on life, so I thought.

Thanks for explaining this Jagnew. I'll be asking a few questions as to what I'm paying for when I have the 85k Raider done.
