Get new c-clips too.

Have you searched for this topic? Including Kevin's username? He has some comments on lock-tite and bearing housings(?). A possible weakness. Haven't wheeled mine enough to know if I have any issues.

Thanks for the pointer, great info on the other links.

Made some progress tonight, and a small set back. Transmission jack worked great. Dif is now hanging in position. Drilled a new hole in the housing for the rear mount. Now trying to figure out how much to trim out of the gen 1 isolator.

Setback was realizing the right CV shaft actually is different between the 2.6l and the V6. Pulled the shock, caliper, tie rod end, and ball joints on the right side to swap in the V6 shaft.

At least there is forward progress now - its going together!

There are two choices for right CV assemblies on the V6. The larger joints are used on the stick. The larger joints also have a larger bolt pattern on the stub axle flange.

I see it now. I have the V6 stick front dif and of course the V6 stick CV shafts. I did a quick tape measure check of the 2.6l Right side bolt circle when still hanging in the vehicle and it looked close to the same but once I had the V6 dif hanging in the new spot I realized the BC is slightly bigger on the axle. Not really a big deal I have the parts, just will add an hour or 2 of my labor to the project.

Here are a few more pics, FWIW. I should have put a tape to the parts when I snapped them. (The third pic has the parts all strung on a long nail/spike so that they would show the edges better.)

In the event that others here are reading this thread, are newer to the forum, and haven't searched too far back, here is a link to when I did this swap. It also has links to other threads from 5+ years ago. (Has it been that long?)

Front LSD thread from the past

None of this is meant to take away from plh's great postings here, which has far better details.

What I do remember is that I used a hole saw to open up the cross member to let the rubber isolator drop down further. This also helped with the pinion angle. I know I did some welding as well.

I did move the bracket mounting points so that I did not have to drill the tab on the pumpkin.

Obviously both way work.... ItÆs all about preferences.

Fun to read the old threads!

Kevin

Another Thread

I found the thread where it was figured out that the 88-89 Starion LSD fit using the V6 front axles and CV joints.

Prior to that the only known swaps were using the 87 Starion diff in the V6 housing with 4 cyl axles and using the 4 cly housing with the 86 and older Starion LSD.

I remember being told that there was no way to use the V6 axles with an LSD, but I was not convinced. Turns out it was a pefect fit.

Fun times,

Kevin

We've come a long way.

There's really not an offroad modification thats NOT available for us.

Hopefully will finish up on Saturday. Did a little work the later part of the week, but other things in life took most of my time after work - oh yea and it rained a bunch for a few days.

There was mention in some of the old posts I read that people have installed axle retainers. Not sure where as I didn't run across any photos. Here is a shot of the assembly which I pulled, can someone point out where to install the retainer? I'll guess guess on the bolt head side...

Toasty will be happy that the Aisins he sold me earlier this year are finally getting put in place

man oh man those rotors look pitiful. 4 days of rain and they get all rusted up. I ordered a new set of '89 V6 size from Rock Auto for $11 each, I grabbed the caliper mounts and dust shields off my '89 so when I get the Gen 2 UCAs I can tear everything apart again
