Well... those of you who know me, well my love for Pajero's goes waaaay back.

I'm coming back to Pajero's.

I can't stay away.

First JDM 6 years ago was a Pajero SWB.
2nd JDM 5 years ago was a Pajero LWB.
3rd/4th JDM's 3-4 years ago were L300 Delica's.
5th JDM this past year is a L400 LWB 2.8

Well I just hopped into a LWB Paj just like my old one and I started missing mine. Big time.

I'm selling the L400 LWB as it's huge and Maryna doesn't feel comfortable driving it.

She drove our Paj when we first had it and would like one.

So, I'm on the hunt.

Q. Is the 2.8 THAT much better than the 2.5 ?

I can get a 2.5 LWB, factory rear locker, engine has had a major going over, looks good for around 6k.

For around 7-8k I can import a good 2.8.

Let's go guys. Let me have it. Give me the why the 2.8 is better or why the 2.5 locked and 2 grand less is better.

I'm VERY happy to be coming back. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

if you feel like wheeling your pajero then go with the locked Paj...they are pretty rare in a diesel!! If you don't plan on wheeling it religously and don't want to ever change a timing belt...the 2.8 is the better choice. as with any decision there are pro's and con's....You just have to decide what you want to do with it and what suits you best.

Parts availabilty on the 2.8 is a bit harder too I think, I know the 4m40 came in some CATERPILLAR miniature excavators but industrial and automotive engines are usually different in quite a few ways, even though they are the same engine.

personally I would stick with the 2.5 Diesel as that engine has been around for 20(ish) years and has proven its longevity to many people. I read a guy in australia has over 1,000,000KM on his 4D56 and only done routine maintenance on it.

I'm leaning towards the 2.5 locked because I'm also saving close to 2k compared to the 2.8

2.5 the belts, water pump, filters, fluids, brakes, cv's were all done recently.

A few mods to the 2.5 ... 2.5" exhaust, bigger intercooler, bigger turbo fan/fins and it should be good.

I can't wait to be back.

It felt like I was cheating on my old Paj when I went over to Delica's. heh

Hey Phil... let's hear your opinion. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Looked at four 2.5 Paj's. They all were asking too much. Around 6-7k. For that much I can import a 2.8 with low mileage, which is what I'm going to do.

Found one in Japan today. Deposit tomorrow and or course, the waiting game.

Can't wait.

Hey Phil... looks like your twin. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" />

My opinion:

There are NO cons to the 2.8 unless you're counting your mileage closely. Fuel econ is not as good (not hugely different) but otherwise, it is a totally upgraded machine. Cold starts have zero drama. Even unplugged. Smoke is non-existent unless you want it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Vac pump is on the block, instead of sitting behind the alternator, waiting to give it a bath. Timing CHAIN. Larger diffs, trans.

Avail of parts? Not much diff from the 2.5. No I can't walk into Ford or Dodge and spec something from the 4D55, but how often do they have parts in stock for the old old diesels anyways?

I loved my 4D56, don't get me wrong. But this 4M40 is a different rig entirely. Having owned both, I would never go back.

And welcome back. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the welcome <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I've decided on the 2.8 for those reasons.

I've been driving our L400 2.8 and got used to it's power.

Hopped into a 2.5 and ... what can I say <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Am I banished or can I still stay ? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I've been trying so hard to get Maryna back into a Paj but these L400 Spacegear's keep popping up in front of our place.

She hated the long wheel base. Looked and drove like a long bus.

Short wheel base with the crystal bubble roof looked very Japanese.

Short wheel base low roof lifted she's liking it.

Latest edition.

More closer to the Paj. Low roof, moon roof in the rear and the same lovely drivetrain and engine.

Of course it needed some of my own touches. Bone stock, they are butt ugly.

Banished or forgiven ? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Your rig is too unique to flog off for something off the rack. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rodent.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Just scored a full locking rear-end out of an SR which will be going into this rig. Will post project pics although I anticipate a direct bolt-in. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
