I met BigBlue in person, at his school. Seemed like a nice guy. Showed me his Raider up on the rack and in a partial state of disassembly. Showed me around the shop, etc. Seemed really nice.

Turns out he was practicing a bit of social engineering on me, and caused problems for me with some others I knew. I'll never speak to him again.

Interesting. I seem to recall you relating this story before.

I flew to Albuquerque years ago and bought an '87 Raider (freakin' mint condition) after Lloyd took a look at it for me. He also picked me up at the airport, drove me around all day and showed me a ton of pictures from wheeling at his house before I drove the 8 hours back to Phoenix. He didn't have to do any of it, but he's a really nice guy, and I appreciate it to this day. No question, he's a quirky guy, but his heart's in the right place.

Lloyd still wheels. He just got tired of posting his experiences with equipment or wheeling opinions and always having to defend himself.

Was happening quite a bit but then again he sometimes said things w/out putting stupid disclaimers about where his statements apply or putting something about 'in my experience' to qualify his comment. Stupid to have to do that each time but there you go. That's straight from the horses mouth on that.

My issue was a tendency to stretch things a tiny bit. Like the story he had about towing a 10,000 pound trailer up a steep five mile grade with one quart of water in the motor. It never overheated because of the Monteros superior design since the engines oil cooler was large enough to take all the heat out of the engine.

I'm sure he thought it was possible....

So calling that story a lot of BS is bad? That was just one of many.

Ray might believe it, but not me.

Main thing that torqued me off about Lloyd is that he would never own up to his mistakes, and take responsibility for repairing his vehicle to withstand his torment on the trail. It was always beating down some mechanic that was at fault. So it seemed to me that he did not know much about vehicle mntc / modifications, but wanted to act like he did. I tried to get him to suck it up, and do things himself, but he would never listen.

Kary on the other hand could not deal with others..... and thats a kinda necessary skill.

Too bad too, because there was so much to learn from him.

I think Lloyd was simply adverse to wrenching on his rigs.

I told him all the time that it's inconceivable that there were no mechanics in the entire Albuquerque capable of a job well done.

Kary... well lets just say my opinion would be a bit biased so I'll keep the trap shut.

I have a "Lloyd Funny" and I don't mean to pick on him; I like the guy and he CAN take a joke, BUT... he once told me about how you could drive a Montero underwater and let it run for 20 minutes without damaging the engine because of the huge volume of air in the fender that the intake draws through. I mean, could I really take that seriously? No. But it was just the way that he told the story that was so engaging. He really likes these vehicles. He believes in them and he wants you to also. I like him and part of the reason I learned more about my own rig is because he kind of drew me in.

He's welcome at my camp fire anytime. Even though he was the first person I ever saw with the goofy hat-mounted lights that would wave all over the place while he was cooking and talking. Good times. Good times.
