My Gen I 2.6 was a horrible gas guzzler off road.

On Road 17 MPG ( not loaded )
Off Road 8-10 MPG ( loaded for three day trip )

That's a 42% increase in fuel consumption. I had to carry at least 10 Gallons of extra gas on the Mojave Road. You could only stuff about 14 gallons in the SWB Gen I main tank.

My Gen II.5 holds 24 gallons. I have not taken the it on a long haul off road trip. I'm wondering what others have experienced in off road fuel consumption with the 3.5L. I'm hoping it's better the the 2.6

My 92 with the 3.0 gets about 19-21 in my normal daily driving around and about 15 if I'm in 4wd and using it. The 24 gallons is expensive to fill, but does help with range.

I get 17 max onroad and i get maybe 20+ offroad, what are you crazies doing offroad to get such bad milage? My trick is staying in low range and i might do 15mph once in a while. Now if i was aired down and driving on a dirt road in 4hi i'd probably get 8mpg or less.

Les, I don't have a 3.5, but I will say that my mileage doesn't change that much (in some situations its better), but it really depends on what kind of trail I'm running. I've often thought that an hour meter would be a good little gauge to have, since wheeling is often spent at idle, looking over an obstacle, lining up to pull someone out, etc...

That's basically it. I'm in 4H going down dirt roads that have spots that require 4x4, Typical desert exploration stuff.

would leaving it in AWD vs switching to 4WHi gain better mileage? Since the SR has on the fly 4wd it seems like less of a hassle to switch between the two.

You might see a little improvement in AWD since there would be no bind/drag while turning but it probably wouldn't be noticable. You guys should really try 4Lo, you can shift through all gears while in 4Lo. It's really easy on the truck it won't have to try so hard especially for you 4cyl guys.

Les, since i've ridden with you i know why your gas milage is so low but it was fun zooming up and down those hills.
