I suppose it could, but the nut is typically staked in place and that deformed lip on the nut makes it hard to remove. Would need the nut to turn outwards until it hit the drive shaft flange, then have the flange slip backwards and then the nut to turn farther and so on until it turned all the way out. The nut should still be trapped between the two flanges.
