I have searched many posts but could not find a clearly defined answer. I want to change out my 88 trans for one with a lock up converter and then mate that with a np231. I found a 89 tranny on CL but don't know if this will work. Can you guys tell from the pics?

That's the wrong side of the converter to tell for sure. There's a code plate on the dside of the tranny - Check yours and see if it's a P code. The lockup should have an R in the same place. I think I have the letter codes right, but in any case, the new tranny should have a letter code later alphabeticly to be a lockup.

The change apparently was a running change in the 89 model year. Never seen an 88 with one, all 90's seem to have one, and afaik, most 89's had one.

It's worth getting. You'll have to swap your 4cyl bellhousing onto the new tranny to fit the 2.6. You'll use the 2.6 flexplate, IIRC. Get all those spacer thingys on his flexplate, though.

I thought it was a running change in '90 - and that no '89s had Lockup converters....... except for mine <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> - but mine came from a '91, IIRC.

fasteddy, you say it's worth getting. do you mean if it is a lockup or even if its not? my trany is working fine currently.

Body Damage is Cool
Please correct me if I am wrong, but the Mitsu tranny won't mate to a NP231

It will with a pice of pipe, two flat plates, and a spud shaft. And a lot of skull sweat.

I would not bother unless I got a lockup in the deal. It saves 300rpms at a 3000rpm cruise in tranny slip. It's worth saving 10%.

I have an 89 with the lockup. Looked like the original install when I took it out to fix the oil pump leak.

I'd install new front and rear and shifter shaft seals if I did nothing else to the donor tranny.

KevinC says the np231J, 23spline will mate up with our trany, but there are a few minor issues to figure out. I'm going to work on this hear and there, so i'll have plenty of time to figure it all out OR figure out if I just don't want to do it:) thx for help all.

I did?

Crap, I am really loosing it.

That looks like a V6 non lockup. STill should be an improvment over the 4 cyl converter. You will need to use the converter with the V6 tranny.

question, in what way is the v6 tranny better than the i4?

Because the bellhousing fits the FAR superior V6. Duh!
