If it's got a P code on the tranny tag, it's non l/u, R and it is l/u.

My last genI had a non-lockup, and though I didn't put many miles on it, it definitely could've used the lockup. With larger tires it sometimes lit the trans-overheat light... my current auto drops 3k when locked, and you can slowly increase throttle without getting the annoying down-shift/upshift repetition when climbing modest grades, etc. Definitely worth the swap if you don't have it already. Sorry I can't provide numbers, but mitsulvr may post up with what my former 89 had for a trans. It might be handy to know the month of manufacture too, to get a handle on when it changed over?

If it's got a P code on the tranny tag, it's non l/u, R and it is l/u. OK.. here some pics from the trans.. I have NO IDEA which model this thing is EXCEPT this.. It has a "P" which according to FE is a non-lockup.. Guy showed me the vehicle it came out of and was a 91 V6 1st gen 4dr... According to the plate on the tranny, and mitsu's code, this looks like a 1993 trans??? and a AW372-L unit?? I'm looking at this for a ref pg 11.. Mitsu Trans PDF So I'm lost.. what do you guys think? EDIT: I also saw this... Sept 89-Apr 91 same variants as above except KM148 replaced with lock up 4sp V4AW2 ![[Linked Image]](http://www.montero4x4.com/garage/V4AW2/tranny1.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://www.montero4x4.com/garage/V4AW2/tranny2.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://www.montero4x4.com/garage/V4AW2/tranny3.jpg)

If it is a 93 trans, it means it would be the super-select/active trac unit with viscous coupled center for AWD...

That's not an active track T case, Thats a gen 1 T-Case and Mitsu didn't change tranny's untill 94 with the introduction of the 3.5 and 3.0 24V. No electronic input in 92 or 93, just the standard kick down cable like on all the other autos. So even if it was connected to the Active track case you could still use it mated to a gen 1 case using the tailhousing off a gen 1 auto trans.
That one looks like a late model gen one trans, seeing as how its connected to a Gen 1 T-case.

...Mitsu didn't change tranny's untill 94 with the introduction of the 3.5 and 3.0 24V... On a related side note, the 3.5 DOHC came in 94, but the 3.0 that year was still 12V. The 3.0 24C SOHC was 95-96. Pretty sure the 94 3.0 then was the older tranny. IIRC, when I CAPS search the bellhousings, the 3.0 was the same from 89-94. (Was thinking about the same 2.6L tranny swap talked about this thread, but with Gen II and Active-Trac.)

Cool deal guys, and thanks for all the info. While searching the archives, I found this!!! DougB's AW372L Swap... DougB's AW372-L swap Now a couple of quick questions... Justice: since yours is a 89... you had the throttle cable adj.. did you have it on the later trans? Because on this newer one, I see no place for the throttle cable adj and that harness is starting to worry me (last thing i want to get into is a comp-controlled trans system conversion) .. In CAPS, they show no TCU unit except for 94 & up. But again, I don't see a place on this trans for a shift cable. They also show only a KM148 or a V4AW2 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" /> Does anyone have the 91 specific factory manuals? Because I need to look at this harness disaster and see what's up. Thanks again guys! Jason EDIT: Researching older posts, others have confirmed the AW372-L/A44D-L swap... but looking at the codes that Kevin C. talks about for it and such, this is a 93 trans so someone did replace it on that 91 body they pulled it from. More 4x4Wire Auto trans stuff !!

The Throttle cable goes into the trans on the passenger side of the trans just in front of the T fitting for the cooler lines if the cable's missing there should be a hole there where it goes in. Too bad a lot of yards are sloppy about pulling these and either yank out the cable or mangle it all up.
That harness is a little funky. If its out of a 93 it could have a bunch of stuff for the Active track tcase switches. FOr the gen I you just need to worry about the AT temp light switch and the OD solenoid. The T Case part of the Gen I harness is separate IIRC. You might need to sort through it a bit and figure out what you need and what you dont. Or better yet source a Gen 1 Harness and ditch whats on there.
Since your going from manual to Auto you will need to do a little fenagaling with it. You'll prob need to run your own wire to ignition switched pos for the OD solenoid so its energized when running and run the circuit through the shifter switch so you can tun it off when you want. You could ditch the light altogether and run a temp gauge in its spot.
