No. The cluster gear input and output gears on the mainshaft are not locked to the mainshaft in hi range, just in low range. As well, the chain drive spsrocket is not locked to the mainshaft, so the chain is not driven. In hi range, the two parts of the mainshaft are locked together so the drive is direct to the rear driveshaft.

It is fairly simple to remove the tcase output housing and chain cover and check the rear mainshaft bearing for slop.
