I can make a bubble flare to hold the hose clamp and not tear the tube. I clamp the tube in the flaring tool, with about 3/8" protruding (adjust for tube diameter) and whang it with a hammer in an axial direction, which bulges the tube above the flaring clamp enough to hold a clamp.
