Help checking problematic speedo #968881 10/21/09 02:18 AM

I have a 92 4 cylinder/5speed with a speedometer that is working intermittently. The last time this happened it was the nylon gear in the xfer case getting stripped and shredded by a failing set of gears. I yanked that out hoping not to find the same shredded gear and it was fine.

The trip meter and odometer still work when the speedo isn't so I'm figuring it's an electrical gremlin.

Before I yank the dash apart to pull out the instrument cluster to check the speedo dial itself (which I really don't want to do), I'd like to check the electronic gizmo at the transfer case. I've looked all over the shop manual and can't find it anywhere-let alone proper testing procedures or electrical values for anything.

Does anyone know where to find this info in the manual or on a website somewhere (Roger, are you listening? )?

I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Never played with the electronic sender, but the mid-90s model FSMs have the testing procedure. From the '93 FSM:

Quote
2. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR
Check that there is continuity between terminals A and B
four times par each revolution of the speedometer shaft.
If operation is not as specified, replace the speedometer.

If anyone would have known, I knew it would be you. Roger, what section of the manual did you find this in? I've thumbed through a gazillion pages and only found a part on checking the speedometer itself, not the speed sensor.

Thanks!

It is in the Body/Electrical section. I think that is applicable, it is in the speedometer testing section but talks about the speedo cable turning and since there is no speedo cable on those models, that must mean the VSS turning.

And Marlin's VSS page says it is a 4 pulse/rev. device:

I don't have the part in my hand so I'm trying to remember what it looks like... Does the nylon gear that sits in the xfer case slide on to the end of Marlin's VSS?

Edit 1

Never mind what I just posted...

This is the speed sensor, correct? http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/parts-upgrade/vehicle-speed-sensor-oem

This is what I am questioning the integrity of right now.

Edit 2... senility is setting in.

What part of the OEM piece does Marlin's VSS replace?

Yep, that is the sensor, gear on the end of the shaft. I think Marlin's part is intended to replace the stock part (if it is bad) or add the VSS like when you put a daul t-case on a newer vehicle (w/ electronic speedo) and the old case was set up for the cable driven speedo.

Thanks Roger. You're alright in my book. Next time you are on your way through Sac give me a buzz... I owe you a beer or two!
