So is it recommended to only use Mitsubishi ATF Fluid? Or is there other options for those with no dealership anywhere near them. Nice write up. I will give it a shot this spring when the weather warms up.

I will give it a shot this spring when the weather warms up. I haven't done any research on fluids yet, but I've had excellent luck with Amsoil Racing Synthetic and Royal Purple in race cars in the past (Volvo/Toyota automatic transmissions - AW71 and AW55). Unless my research suggests there's a good reason not to use those, I plan to use one of those fluids in my next Montero.

Mobil One Synthetic ATF Multi-Vehicle lists as compatible with Mitsubishi Diamond SP-II Sp-lll. I'm using it now and no problems with trans. Since this thread has been brought back I would like to add that the trans pan fluid pumps dry VERY quickly and so I would not recommend the turn on/turn off method. I have done this several times and prefer to use an assistant to turn the vehicle on and off while I add fluid non stop down the dip stick tube. If for some reason you need to stop adding then have the helper turn the truck off until ready to begin again. If the sump runs dry you foam the fluid which is also not good for the trans. I also buy one or two quarts over capacity of trans to make sure old fluid is flushed.

I have gotten my ATF from these folks in the NY area. They shipped it directly to my house, with no sales tax. http://www.streettunedmotorsports.com/diy/diy_fluids.htm

I use a funnel. The same type in the picture that is being used to direct the old AFT from the trans cooler. The end is small enough to fit in the dip stick tube, and the filler end is tall enough to pour without making a mess.

Is there any other fluid options recommended? I was recommended Vavoline Maxlife. it meets the FSM specs. This is really good info. I am going to do the service this weekend along with dropping the pan replacing the gasket (its leaking a good bit) Also I know the screen is probably in good shape but I am replacing it for good measure.

Ive always heard to go with Mitsu stuff, even from the 2 Mitsu techs I know personally. I'm gonna have to try this method out soon when it warms up outside.

Recon, if there are any other fluid options, they aren't much different in price. You'll only get a unanimous "it's O.K., use it" from the Mitsu stuff, at least on this board.
