With running engine fluid will pump out very quickly. You can hear it going. Point is not to run it for too long without fluid. If you hear(see) it stopped pouring out in less than a minute then turn off engine. I will be surely gone in 1 minute.
Point on detergent is that if it's not broken don't fix it. I would likely do more harm than good.
