Getting the Wheeling Fever
The more I read the more I'm thinking WTF. I am seeing post where people are saying that they are getting up to 18-20mpg out of their Gen II's. I do have 265/75-15 and the SOHC 3.5 V6, did the older DOHC 3.5s just get better gas mileage? It doesn't seem to matter what I am doing I have never gotten above 16mpg (easy on the loud pedal, all freeway & tires at 36psi), but I have seen as low as maybe 12mpg (awd & tires at 29psi). I would love to hear your thoughts on why I'm get crap gas mileage.

I stay out of the throttle. I installed manual hubs to lessen the drag from the front axle half-shaft's spinning. Now that it's cooler, I don't use the a/c. I don't have need for AWD here in Phoenix. I keep the maintenance up, particularly the air filter and synthetic oil (Shell Rotella T 5W-40). There's synthetic lube in everything in the drivetrain except for the transmission. My tires are running 35 psi. My alignment is good. I don't speed, and I drive/plan way ahead. No quick starts, gentle acceleration, look ahead for slow-downs or stops and use momentum. I use the slow lane and set the cruise control whenever I can safely and prudently use it.

I get around 16 mpg in mixed driving, pushing 33/12.5 on 15" wheels, M/T pattern in my '95 SR with the 3.5 DOHC.

Feel better?

My 4-cyl, carb'd 2.6L has been good for 15-17 mpg for mixed driving the last 3.5 years. Unless it's snowy winter, dragging my water trailer, and dinkin' around a mass grading site, then my mileage has dropped to 12-13. I use my Raider like a 1-ton quite often.

Gas mileage ...lol..I'm the last one to ask about this I drive like the Village Idiot but thats my job.. ..

Funny statement to me ... Have had lot of take about it over the years do to the job.. I've had people say numbers that make me lol.. Making me think ." well your car/suv would not get that mileage if it was dropped out of a plane with the motor off...lol.."...or "you must have math problems " ...lol

Not take it to heart .. Lot of factors in play tire size is one,, speedo is off...ware you live ...and so on... and men and cars can be full of BS.. ..

I've got toys that cost $8.00 to start I think ...Let alone drive everyday.. lol... My SWB turbo Monty is realy high horse power and AWD if you drove it "you" would be stomping on the gas too ..trust me ... The other Montys in the herd dont do much better ...In my world if it gets bad mpg my girl drives it .. She can get much better mpg then I ever could ..Alot is how you drive ..

The mid teens in mileage is about right for these flying boxes we love ...Mitsu stuff are pigs just a facted ...

I want to know how the car makers get away with lying out there back side on mpg .. ??

Have a good day

My v6 Raider gets 18-20 with 31 inch tires. It's all about how much you wana stretch that gallon really. I do tune ups once a year and replace everything. Fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and sometimes the timing belt.

How accurate are your speedo and odo? I was getting worse mileage than I thought I should until used a GPS to correct my calculations.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have been wondering about the accuracy of my speedo/odometer for a while now, next time I get a chance to check it against a GPS I will.

I know that my front hubs are robbing my efficiency because when the front end is jacked up it takes noticeable effort to get the front tires to rotate.

I also have a fairly strong pull to the left, so I know I have alignment issues; hopefully this will get sorted with the new suspension and tires next month.

I guess it just erks me that I cant get 400 miles off a tank of gas given the fact that im hauling around a 24 gallons of gas! I think the best I have done is around 350 miles on a tank.

I know I have posted before that I get upwards of 22 mpg's but I will admit that my speedo is off with the bigger tires. My last 2 fill ups were 355 miles and 19 gallons and 320 and 18 gallons (18.68 and 17.77). I have seen much better but am not sure why? Lately I have been driving in snow/cold.

My calculations account for my 8% error with my tires.
