Sounds like the rod journals were turned down 0.25mm..... not good at all according to Mitsubishi's TSB.

This is the first anecdotal evidence I've seen that the TSB should be taken as Gospel - there has been some speculation that the crankshaft can be reground and the radius reworked..... even one of my local machinists thinks it can be done. Maybe on this one, they didn't try to grind the fillet radius back to the same relief relative to the journal, but who knows.

After seeing this, I doubt I'll ever try to grind one of these crankshafts to find out if it can be safely done.

It also should be a lesson to anyone who considers buying a remanufactured 3.0L engine. Thanks for posting it.

If the color of the rods looks ok - with no blue discoloration - and if they are checked for length, twist and thickness - you should be able to rebuild the engine with a replacement crankshaft and bearings..... but I'd also want to inspect the saddle area of the block around the mains and the girdle for discoloration and wear. The pistons and wrist pins should be carefully inspected as well.
