driver's side outer tie rod end--two in a year #970622 11/04/09 03:02 AM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
For some reason, I'm going through driver's side outer tie rod ends. The first (Moog) failed after only 10 months and less than 8k miles. The last (TRW) failed tonight after 3 months. Pennsylvania roads are notoriously bad, for what it's worth. That said, I suspect another problem. In the last year I replaced inner and outer rods and sleeves on both sides, as well as idler arm and pitman arm and ball joints all around. I can't understand what else could be causing this. Do you guys have any ideas? Are the quality of Moog and TRW parts really that bad?

Moog is the best usually. How is the part failing, is it just wearing out on the ball and socket? Could something have gotten inside the rubber boot?

the boot seems to split and ooze grease. Which brings up the question, how much grease should you load into the joint at install time?

Oozing grease doesn't mean its failed...?

You just need enough grease in there to keep it wet/lubricated. More isn't better, especially if its splitting boots.

Moog should be good from what I've heard, but its hard to beat OEM Toyota stuff. I've got over 270k on my original TRE's.

No, oozing grease doesn't mean it failed, but when the boot is split and there is play in the joint, it means it failed and that has been my experience. When the Moog joint failed, it was almost impossible to keep the truck on the road at speeds > 50MPH.

Got any piccies of yer front suspension? Not sure if you don't have some other problem at hand. Any loose/broken bolts/parts in the suspension?
