Yer float/needle are toast. Bet your dipstick smells like gas. Time for a rebuild before it washes down your engine.

Sorry, the float/needle valve sit *above* the fuel in the bowl & cannot possibly leak fuel out of the bowl. While I have seen this problem on an 18R I never could figure out where the fuel went for sure, but most likely, into the crankcase.

Dave Agreed. There is NO way for gravity to let the fuel drain out of the bowl. That said, I finally witnessed fuel dumping from my secondaries a few minutes after shutting the truck off that I've yet to figure out

Interesting. The truck will sit for 4 days or so, before I start it again. The site glass is empty and you have to crank forever to get gas up again.

Don't get me wrong, the fuel is indeed emptying, just not through the needle & seat. I never did figure out where it went in my old 18R, a rebuild seemed to cure it without turning up the culprit.

There is a check valve in the fuel pump. If it goes bad, gas gets sucked back into the tank. My bowl had been draining, but didn't after installing a new pump.

Newish pump, but I understand. This is a mechanical pump, if it matters.

Yep it does. My firsthand experience with washdown by a carb was it letting down into the crankcase. Dipstick reeked of fuel. Rebuild was the fix. I'd have to break out the FSM and give another look. Seems something isn't seating, which is why I mentioned the float/needle. Give the parts breakdown a look on Scerb's website and see what you think-- you'll need it anyway: http://www.bluebassdesign.com/boonin/carb_faq/

I can't find a good diagram, but here's how it works. The needle & seat are in the lid of the carb, above the bowl. When the float drops, the valve opens & dribbles fuel through the air above the bowl & then into the bowl.
Even if the needle valve was wide open, the only thing that can be sucked back through the fuel line is air.
I cannot explain how changing a fuel pump "cured" a dry bowl problem, but I am certain there is no way to suck fuel out of a carb via the fuel supply line.
