I don't see any need to mess w/ the snap ring.
No, if it is just a lekay seal att he stub shaft, tehre is no need to take anything apart in the pumpkin or removeteh other side.

Simply...
remove the CV shaft (yes, I know, thsi isn't so easy, prob have to tilt teh whole spindle out).
Remove teh stub shaft. It will just pop out... of course it may take some creative pryin gand profanity, but it will indeed pop out.
Now you can see the oil seal.
Get yourself a seal puller, "rent" from autozone (free) or Harbor Freight etc.
Yank the seal out, clean it well.
Put in new seal. IIRC a 3" (or is it 2.5"?) PVC pipe is a perfect size to push the new one back into place.
Reinstall everything.
Drink beer.
