Well, if the tach drops out (I assume you means the indicated RPM drops to near 0 periodically) that would indicate an electrical/ignition issue, since that is what drives the tach. Check for stored trouble codes in the ECU:

i have checked the codes and it shows no codes the engine light flashes once. i have checked the coil and ignition pack and the output is strong. i have replaced the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor and have cleaned the mass air sensor curcit board.it does it mostly when its warmed up when its cold it runs good.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
It might be the pick up coil inside the distributor.
My old truck had similar symptoms.
I replaced the distributor with a known good one and it ran fine.

a coil can test out good on the bench/garage but under a load it heats up and will cut out try replacing the coil and see if it still happens i have ran into this problem on allot of older cars trucks ect best way to test it before you replace is to drive till it does it and get out and touch the coil if it is so hot you cant hold it replace it

Getting the Wheeling Fever
What drhula said,

Been around coil problems for a LONG time! Fine when they are cold, but when they are bad ones, they will let you get down the road away from the house, heat up and break down, and so do you.

When I bought my Blazer, fist thing I did was give it a fresh set of plugs, new wires, and a new coil. The coil that was in it is still in the glove box 20 yrs later. But I know it was good and will help me out if the 20 yr old craps out. Check on it.
