The next weakest link would probably be the tierods or draglink. Having the idler as a buffer part won't save any of the other parts, if anything once it bends it's putting more stress on these parts. The shock loads will still be the same on the other parts no matter what but when you've got something at the incorrect angle that's when you break things.
