There's my most recent Victim, I bend an idler almost every time i rock the truck. This isn't just a big tire guy thing this will happen to you if you 4 wheel even with stock tires just not as much. I might have come up with a simple inexpensive fix for this weak link. It will be a bolt on mount that will support the lower end of the shaft to help keep it where it needs to be. I'm going to make a few this week and put them on some higly abused trucks for testing and after that they will be available to anyone who wants one.

I'd almost want to keep the idler arm as the weak link...they are cheap and easy to change!

The next weakest link would probably be the tierods or draglink. Having the idler as a buffer part won't save any of the other parts, if anything once it bends it's putting more stress on these parts. The shock loads will still be the same on the other parts no matter what but when you've got something at the incorrect angle that's when you break things. Don't worry we'll be doing a little testing

Didn't a few people already weld a tab or bracket to hold the bottom of the idler arm? BigBlue, Don, Llyod, I dont remember.

Edit: Found it. http://www3.telus.net/public/dhuysman/idlerarm.html

I was thinking of the same thing Sparky. Pretty sure it was Don.

TOASTY, is that a Mitsu idler arm? The reason I ask is that I replaced my old factory arm for an eBay arm and I bent it the first mine I wheeled with it. The old factory arm never bent so I replaced it with a Mistu unit ($90) and all has been well.

One thing I noticed on the Mitsu arm is that the shaft is not long enough to add a bracket like the one Sparky linked to.

But the added tab is a 1st gen mod.

I have an aftermarket idler on my SR, I should give it a look.

Not sure, but I know from what I've seen of the gear boxes they are quite different looking. I might have to go look at the idler on one of my MM's and see how similar looking they are. I know I have one off of my 86 MM 4x4 i could look at realy easy. But as of right now its snowing out......

I've been on this board for a while. Your bending parts that nobody else seems to bend. I'm not talking about wussy wheelers like myself but others like Carlos, Dat, Ray etc.

So whats your secret ?
